Aging in Place with Assistance As we age, we tend to think about retirement, life insurance, advance care directives and probably securing home and car payments. However, what many of us fail to consider is what one will need to be able to age in place safely. Preparing for what should be an enjoyable chapter in one’s life can become unanticipated frustration and stress when unprepared. According to the Home and Community Preferences Survey conducted by AARP in November of 2021 data shows that 77 percent of adults 50 and older want to remain in their homes for the long term — a number that has been consistent for more than a decade. So what are things to consider when planning for our futures? • Are there medical conditions that as you age in place you foresee needing additional assistance with? • Is your home equipped with durable medical equipment you will require over time? • Do you need assistance with light housekeeping, or standby assistance when showering? • Do you plan to have family involved in your plan to age in place long term? It is never too early to start your planning. Reaching out to your Area Agency on Aging is a great place to begin. PCOA has a program,
