SEPTEMBER 2023

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA September is a month of transition. Summer fades into fall. Children return to school. And we shift from tending the garden to preserving its bounties. Transition is also taking place at TPT this month. We have made a major investment to update broadcast and customer service technology so that we can better serve viewers and members and fulfill our mission for generations to come. This month, we are updating our customer service tools to provide a more streamlined and personalized experience to our members and viewers. We appreciate your patience with delayed response times from our member services team as we make the transition. You can learn more about our technology updates and digital transformation on page 10. September is also a month of celebration at TPT. From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month uplifts the contributions, diverse cultures, and histories of Hispanic Americans. We have a line-up of programming in recognition of the month highlighted on page 9. We are also celebrating the premiere of season two of America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston on September 6, on TPT 2 at 7 p.m. Produced by TPT for national distribution by PBS, the second season of the acclaimed series features a six-episode journey across the United States — showcasing Utah, Maine, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oregon, and the Suwannee River in Georgia and Florida — to discover how nature shapes the way Americans work, play, and interact with the outdoors. This season of America Outdoors digs into the growing evidence that links people’s overall health and wellness with being outside, explores new ways of making the outdoors accessible to everyone, and demonstrates how Americans are adapting their time outdoors to our changing climate. TPT is committed to innovation and excellence in everything we do. Our commitment ensures that we continue to serve the needs of our community. We could not do this work without your support. Thank you.

Series Returns with More Experiences off the Beaten Path to Explore What Drives Our Passion for the Outdoors in Six New Locations

America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston returns for a second season on Wednesdays, September 6-October 11 at 7 p.m. on TPT 2. Produced for PBS by TPT and Part2 Pictures, the nationally broadcasted series is hosted by New York Times bestselling author, podcaster, and outdoor enthusiast, Baratunde Thurston. The series follows him on an adventure- filled journey across the U.S. to discover how nature shapes the way Americans work, play, and interact with the outdoors. In its second season, America Outdoors will highlight even more regions and environments, finding unique expressions of our outdoor culture in Utah, Maine, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oregon and the Suwannee River, in Georgia and Florida.

“I love getting to experience this country through the lives of people deeply connected to nature,” said Thurston. “I’ve witnessed healing, transformation, and plain old fun. This second season has more America and more outdoors!”

New this season, episodes will dig into the growing evidence that links people’s overall health and wellness with being outside, and will also explore new ways of making the outdoors accessible to everyone. Planning for the Future: Twin Cities PBS Investing in Digital Transformation and Technology Upgrades

As the media industry evolves, Twin Cities PBS (TPT) is taking bold strides by investing in digital transformation and broadcast technology to revolutionize its outreach and impact.

Even though digital streaming technology often takes center stage, TPT remains steadfast in its commitment to broadcast technology. While media trends show that more viewers are consuming media through streaming, we know that many of our viewers still rely on broadcast. This is why we are making a significant investment in our broadcast technology. The antenna replacement we undertook this summer ensures that TPT will continue to reach current viewers with broadcast programming. It will also allow us to transition to NextGen TV, the next generation of digital TV technology. NextGen TV will increase TPT’s ability to enhance the visual appeal of our programs and provide a more personalized viewing experience for audience members with smart TVs. A hallmark of TPT's technology investment is its focus on data-driven strategies. Embracing cutting-edge analytics tools, the organization gained valuable insights into viewer preferences, behavior patterns, and content performance. This invaluable data- driven approach enabled TPT to make informed decisions regarding technology investments, while planning for a future where we can personalize the viewing experience for our audience. As the media landscape continues to evolve, TPT remains firmly committed to shaping the future of broadcasting and streaming, redefining how public media organizations engage with their audiences.

TPT is committed to delivering content to its viewers anywhere, anytime. This commitment is at the heart of our participation in the Digital Transformation Program. TPT is among 75 media stations across the country selected to participate in the joint CPB and Poynter Institute’s program to educate, assist, and coach stations on the best strategies and tactics to transform their organization’s digital operations and culture. Through the program, we have built a team of content, marketing, data and evaluation, and revenue leaders who are reimagining how we work together differently in service to our strategic vision to support holistic digital innovation.

NEXT AVENUE SPECIAL SECTION

Digital Ageism By Lisa Napoli

My cell phone started ringing just as I turned the key in my front door. George, my dear friend and neighbor, was calling. We had just shared a celebratory lunch, and an unwelcome surprise awaited him when he returned to his apartment. Building management had installed a new digital lock on his front door while we were out. And he didn't have the code. Management had been alerting tenants about the upcoming change via email and text — methods of communication my friend didn't use. As his eyesight had been faltering, George, 90, hadn't been getting online much lately. His sole lifeline to the world was his ever-ringing flip phone.

"Companies need to provide humans to talk with.”

After an hour, a friendly building maintenance person showed up to George’s door, extolling the virtues of the new system as if he were a salesperson.

In the name of efficiency, more companies are driving customers to conduct business digitally. QR codes for menus in restaurants. Apps for everything, from banking to health care to routine maintenance requests. The presumption that everyone's life is fully digital — and that everybody is, or wants to be, comfortable with screens — shuts out many who may not be deft with the technology, or even have access to it. One person's efficiency tool can be another's obstacle, said Dr. Caroline Cicero, a gerontology professor. "I don't think we should assume that everyone, young or old or middle-aged, is better off using an app," she said. "Companies need to provide humans to talk with.”

"People just love these new digital locks," he said, ignoring the addled state of the tenant before him.

"Can't I just have a key?" George asked, pointing to the old-fashioned keyhole above the keypad. "There's no way I'll remember the [code], much less be able to see those numbers." In the meantime, I rooted on the countertop for a pen, and began writing out cheat-sheets. Sticking a piece of paper in George's wallet, I also made a record of it for myself.

"This is your new key," I said, trying to feign optimism.

Return to Isle Royale: Two Brothers Relive a 1963 Hiking Trip By Dan Gjelten

Our father was a guy who, even late in life, woke up in the morning asking, "what are we going to do today?" His need for activity led to a love of travel and camping for weeks each summer. In the summer of 1963, he and a friend from our small Iowa town decided to take their middle school aged sons (two each) all the way to Grand Portage, Minnesota — a seven-hour drive — and then a boat to Isle Royale National Park and hike its forty miles from west to east. Isle Royale is a rugged and isolated island in Lake Superior, the least visited national park in the U.S. Dad was in his early 40s, and my brother and I were 15 and 12, respectively.

In 2022, Tom and I had both recently retired — he after a 40-year career as a correspondent for National Public Radio. I'd spent my life working in libraries, mostly in the university. Since childhood, we'd never lived close to each other, Tom in other countries or in the DC area, while I lived most of my life in St. Paul, Minnesota.

I always envied my brother's exciting life but also realized that he may have envied the domesticity of mine.

In 2021, one of us (I can't remember who) proposed a return trip to Isle Royale. It took a year to find a week that would work for both of us. We finally decided on a six-day trip — over the long Labor Day weekend of 2022, when the bug population would be minimal and the temperatures comfortable. We started to lay out a plan — we wanted to hike the same route as we did in 1963 — following the Greenstone Ridge Trail from Windigo Inn on the west end of the island to Rock Harbor Lodge at the east, a 45-mile wilderness hike. I was 71 at the time of the hike and Tom, 74. I began to see the trip as a way for us to reconnect after a lifetime of being apart and observing each other's lives from a distance. Nearly every time we talked, we mentioned Dad and his audacious idea to do the trip with his young sons.
