continued planning for construction of the new Prescott-Russell Residence, pushing for four-lane expansion of the highway link between Rockland and Orléans, and resolving the ambulance dispatch dispute between the counties and the City of Ottawa are his priorities as warden during the next year. “I expect there will be other issues as the year progresses,” he said. St-Amour reflects One of the last duties for Mayor François St-Amour as warden of the counties for 2018 was to help his fellow mayor don his robe

“I will work on behalf of everyone to the best of my ability,” Kirby said during his brief inaugural speech. “I plan to ensure that the transition between the former and the new (counties) council is seamless, and in order to do so we must stay the course on our priorities and advocacy of the past year. Our regional objectives are still very much achievable, and we must continue working together with a united voice to maintain continuity for Prescott and Russell, and to conclude our major projects.” Kirby listed expansion of natural gas service into Prescott-Russell’s rural sectors,

East Hawkesbury Township Mayor Robert Kirby will sit for the third time in the warden’s chair at the United Counties of Prescott and Russell council table. Kirby was acclaimed to the post during the December 19 evening inaugural session of counties council. He is one of just two sitting mayors in Prescott-Russell to assume the warden’s position three times. He served as warden in 2009 and 2015.

&/#3&'r#3*&'4 SPECIAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) is seeking more volunteers to sit on its advisory committees or help with some of the regional conservation group’s projects and programs during the next year. The SNC manages 4,384 square kilometers of forest and wetland habitat in the Eastern Ontario region within the South Nation River watershed. Besides filling vacancies on advisory committees, the SNC needs volunteers to assist with park and public conservation area cleanup, monitoring programs for fish and wildlife, habitat restoration work, tree planting, and other activities, including education and awareness presentations during public events. SNC volunteer work can help students fill their community hours quotas. Anyone interested can contact Taylor Campbell at 1-877-984-2848, extension 296. – Gregg Chamberlain BOEDIBJOPGPGàDF/PX4U"NPVSSFUVSOT to his single role at the counties table as SFQSFTFOUBUJWFGPS5IF/BUJPO.VOJDJQBMJUZ “It was a good year,” St-Amour said, loo- king back at his most recent term as warden. i8FHPUTPNFNBKPSTJ[FEQSPKFDUTHPJOHu St-Amour cited as an example the launch of the Presott-Russell Residence project, including purchase of a site on Spence Street in Hawkesbury as the location for the new facility, and the hiring of a consultant firm as project manager. He also noted that the counties took a strong position in its lobbying the provincial government for a resolution to the ambulance dispatch problem between Prescott-Russell and the City of Ottawa. That includes seeking the settlement of an outstanding debt that Ottawa still owes to the counties for use of Prescott-Russell ambulance units to deal with Ottawa emer- gency calls. Both the past Liberal government and the current Progressive Conservative government have expressed sympathy for the counties and support for a resolution of the dispute. L’une des dernières tâches du maire François St-Amour de la municipalité de La Nation en tant que président des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell a été d’aider son successeur, le maire Robert Kirby du canton de Hawkesbury Est (à gauche), à assumer ses fonctions au poste de président des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell pour 2019. —photo fournie par Justin Bromberg
