East Hawkesbury Township Mayor Robert Kirby will sit for the third time in the warden’s chair at the United Counties of Prescott and Russell council table. Kirby was acclaimed to the post during the December 19 evening inaugural session of counties council. He is one of just two sitting mayors in Prescott-Russell to assume the warden’s position three times. He served as warden in 2009 and 2015.

The SNC manages 4,384 square kilometers of forest and wetland habitat in the Eastern Ontario region within the South Nation River watershed. Besides filling vacancies on advisory committees, the SNC needs volunteers to assist with park and public conservation area cleanup, monitoring programs for fish and wildlife, habitat restoration work, tree planting, and other activities, including education and awareness presentations during public events. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 CDSBEO FISCAL REPORT The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) received an updated fiscal report for the 2018-2019 term costs for operations. Trustees received the report during their December 18 session. The estimates in this report were sent to the Ministry of Education December 15, the same day that the ministry issued a surprise memo to all school districts about a planned $25 million funding cut for special support services, which will affect all schools in the province. The report trustees reviewed estimated $188.8 million in total expenditures for the CDSBEO during the current school term with a possible operating deficit of $632,000 due to a transportation rates arbitration order dealing with the past three terms. The CDSBEO might have had a $1.9 million operating surplus for this term if not for the arbitration order. Trustees will receive further updates in February and May 2019, noting the impact of the surprise funding cuts. – Gregg Chamberlain

Dans le cadre de l’Avent, Bianca Gour, une élève du Pavillon de l’École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet (ESCP), a dirigé la Campagne de sacs à dos pour les sans-abris, avec l’appui de Kiana Nantel Tremblay et du comité Pasto-UNIS. C’est grâce à la grande générosité des élèves du Pavillon de l’ESCP et de leurs familles que 485 articles seront remis aux sans-abris de la région d’Ottawa. Des articles tels des tuques, des brosses à dents, des bas chauds, des livres et du savon ont été amassés. La campagne est un projet de M. Ron Pitre. St-Amour comme président des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell a été de distribuer 25 500 $ récoltés lors du tournoi de golf annuel du président et du banquet du président. M. Le 1 décembre dernier, le CSDCEO, en partenariat avec le Centre éducatif Les Petits Trésors et l’École élémentaire catholique Saint-Paul de Plantagenet, a offert une activité de Bric à Brac pour les enfants de la région de Plantagenet et leurs parents. Les enfants avaient à leur disposition des outils et des matériaux polyvalents leur permettant de développer plusieurs compétences telle la créativité, la collaboration, l’exploration et la manipulation. « Le Bric à Brac est l’occasion idéale pour créer de beaux moments d’apprentissage en famille, a déclaré François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire. THEODORE’S JOURNEY: A FIGHT FOR LIFE

The cost of Theodore’s ordeal has been enormous on the whole family, including the boy’s two sisters, aged nine and three. “Most of his seizures take place at night,” explained Desormeaux. “We barely get any sleep. But it’s not just my husband and I who stay awake most of the night. It’s also my daughters. They are petrified of any noise they hear. They think it might be their brother.” The cost of vitamins, equipment and trav- elling quickly mounted for the family. “We spend about $3000 a month,” she said. “My husband has been working extremely hard.” 'PSIFSQBSU %FTPSNFBVYTUBSUFEXPSLJOH part-time. “At first I didn’t want to, because I didn’t want to be far from him, but I just had to.” 'PSOPX UIFCPZTUBZTXJUIBOBOOZEVSJOH the day, as he can’t go to any daycares. A life-saving service dog The family recently started a fundraiser in order to collect money to procure a special- ized service dog for their son. “We hope to get a service dog for Theo- dore, so that we can be alerted at night when he has seizures,” Desormeaux explained. Time is crucial when dealing with the boy’s seizures, as they often lead to cardiac and respiratory arrest. The dog would alert the household of nightly seizures. In addition, the dog could also break the boy’s fall if he experienced a seizure standing up. “His front teeth are chipped from falling flat on his face,” said his mother. But obtaining such a service dog is expensive, being anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000, and that’s not including main- tenance of the animal, such as shots and neutering. “That’s just for training,” outlined Desormeaux. In addition, organizations that provide service dogs rarely do so to individuals under the age of six. There are no answers for the family of a 20-month-old boy from Bourget. Whereas most children of his age start ex- ploring their growing world, Theodore Philippe Koch’s time is often spent in isolation units in several different Canadian and American hospitals. His case has baffled medical, more precisely neurological, experts from both countries. “No one has ever seen anything like it,” explained the boy’s mother, Shanon Desormeaux. “When we ask doctors what will happen to him, they have no answers. They tell us that we have to wait and see.” Theodore is the only known case of a Canadian afflicted with a mutation of the KCNH1 gene. According to Desormeaux, there are only six known cases throughout the world. No one knows how he became afflicted with the mutation. The only bit of information available to the family of five, three children and two parents, is that the ordeal began shortly after the boy’s vaccina- tion, when he was two months old. “At first, we thought he was allergic to TFWFSBMUIJOHT uTIFOPUFEi-BUFSPO NZ husband and I were tested for the mutation and the results showed that we didn’t carry the mutation.” The KCNH1 gene has several functions, including regulating neurotransmitter re- lease, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume. A mutation of such a gene therefore car- ries several dire consequences. “It’s as if he’s supersensitive to everything” Theodore’s condition affects his immune system, which triggered the allergy-like reac- tions. “His body attacks anything foreign in or around his body,” explained his mother. “When there’s something, his body shuts down.” This has in effect caused the young boy to suffer from cardiac and pulmonary arrest on several occasions. “We have to regulate everything,” Desormeaux stressed. “Or else he gets seizures.” According to his mother, the boy wouldn’t even be safe from his bath water. “We have to regulate it,” she started, “because of the chemicals the city uses in it.” This has led to Theodore adhering to a very strict diet. In addition, he has to take several expensive vitamins. He is however prohibited from taking any medication, for fear that it might trigger an allergic reaction type of response from his body. “Whenever there’s something his body doesn’t recog- nize, it’s as if he falls into a small coma,” said Desormeaux. These can last from several

C’est grâce à la grande générosité des élèves du Pavillon de l’ESCP et de leurs familles que 485 articles seront remis aux sans-abris de la région d’Ottawa. Des articles tels des tuques, des brosses à dents, des bas chauds, des livres et du savon ont été amassés. La campagne est un projet de M. Ron Pitre. L’auteure pour enfants Annie Bacon a visité la succursale de Rockland de la Bibliothèque publique de Clarence-Rockland le 12 décembre dernier, afin de discuter avec les élèves de la communauté. Des élèves de la 4 e à la 6 e année de l’École élémentaire publique Carrefour Jeunesse et de Rockland Public School ont fait le court voyage pour rencontrer Mme Bacon et en apprendre un peu sur le travail d’un auteur. Les enfants ont créé une histoire unique avec des dessins, ont écouté une chanson créée pour eux et ont eu beaucoup de plaisir à apprendre ce que c’est que d’être un auteur pour enfants. —photo fournie

His oldest brother paved the way for Thomas to make his way to Rockland. “My oldest brother is the first one to have attended CIH,” he said. “Then I decided to come too.” His oldest brother currently plays in the American Hockey League. Two of his younger brothers are also learning between the walls of the CIH. “My father never played hockey,” he started, “but he always loved to watch it.” When asked who his favorite player is, Thomas quickly points to T.J Oshie and Austin Matthews. “I like Oshie because he’s an all around player,” the student said. “He’s also physical. I like Matthews because, well, he’s Matthews!”

Thomas Odermatt’s love of hockey transported him continents away from his hometown. Having grown up in Sapporo, Japan, the Canadian Hockey Academy (CIH) student is in his final year of schooling in Rockland. “I hope to play in the American league after I graduate,” he said smiling. “And of course, I hope to play for the NHL. That’s every hockey player’s dream!” The love of hockey runs deep in the young man’s family. “My dad really got into hockey when he studied pre-med at the University of Boston,” the young man explained. “They really like hockey over there.” His father brought back his love of hockey to Japan, which left its mark on Thomas and his siblings. “Hockey isn’t too big in Japan,” he said. “It’s a bit more popular where I’m from because it’s in Northern Japan, but it’s still not as big as it is here.” Thomas has five brothers and two sisters.
