Introduction
Plagiarism is defined as “the presentation of someone else’s work, ideas, opinions, or discoveries, whether published or not, as one’s own”. It is considered unacceptable as authentic evidence for assessment. For accurate assessment of a learner’s knowledge and understanding to occur, it is essential that information presented is created and compiled by the learner themselves.
Purpose
This policy covers SCL Group learners across all provisions. It is important to reference and refer to any guidance provided by the appropriate Awarding Organisation (AO) in the instance of plagiarism. Breaches of this policy will be managed through the Disciplinary Policy.
Preventing Plag iarism
To avoid plagiarism, learners must acknowledge all sources of information that have been used and submitted as part of their evidence. Learners must use/consider: • Listing all sources (books, magazines, internet, AI) at the end of their work using the Harvard referencing method or similar format. • Seeking advice from SCL delivery staff on how to reference and provide a reference list. • Quotation marks/referencing marks to credit the original source, including those that are re-written. • Any form of copied information should only be used as an example or illustration of a point made/concept expressed in the text.
• The information should be only of a length necessary to provide the relevant illustration or example. • The quotation or reference should provide an opportunity for the learner to demonstrate understanding, through the ability to select relevant secondary data for the illustration or example.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
SCL Group recognise the potential benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing the learning experience, however, it is important to maintain the authenticity of learners' work. In certain instances, AI can be employed as a valuable tool to support and augment the learning process. However, it should never be used to generate work on behalf of a learner. Our commitment to academic integrity and the development of genuine skills necessitates that learners actively engage in the learning process and contribute their own knowledge and understanding to their assessments. Misuse of AI is a form of plagiarism and can result in investigation and disqualification. Such incidents must be followed up in line with the Disciplinary Policy. For more information on the acceptable use of AI, consult the Use of AI Policy for Learners or Colleagues.
Addressing Plagiarism
Where plagiarism is identified for the first time, consideration should be made as to whether it was intentional. In the instance plagiarism may have been accidental (i.e., referencing was not completed) this should be addressed immediately with the learner and the Lead IQA must be informed. The opportunity for resubmission and re-assessment in line with course guidelines should be given on this occasion. Where plagiarism is clear (i.e., word for word, or with one or two words/phrases/the formatting changed and deemed to have been copied) either from material published in the public domain, fellow learners, or by using AI, the learner work will be void for assessment. Such incidents must be followed up in line with the Disciplinary Policy. In this instance, the relevant Awarding Organisation’s plagiarism policy must be consulted, and their process followed.
