Guides plan for Euro history trip

ORLÉANS | These guides want to ben- efit from the lessons of yesterday while they’re working hard today to make to- morrow better. The 15 Girl Guides of the Detinu Travel Group and their five Guide leaders spent the first Saturday of May out in the sun in the middle of the parking lot at the Ray Friel Recreation Complex on Tenth Line Road, collecting old television sets, computer monitors and other electronic equipment for salvage and recycling of their valuable metal components and other materials. The e-cycling fair is the latest in a series of fundraising projects the Guides group has had on the go since last year. Besides the e- cycling fair, the girls and their leaders and parent volunteers have hosted a spaghetti supper, sold flower bulbs, sold orders for Regal and Avon products, and, of course, sold cookies. “Lots of cookies,” said Guide Leader Debo- rah Cross, smiling. “Lots and lots of cookies.” The goal is to try and raise as muchmoney as possible to help cover the travel expens- es for the 15 girls and their Guide leaders for a four-country tour of Europe this sum- mer. The Detinu Travel Group is made up of Pathfinders, Rangers, and other Girl Guides members from Ottawa, Orléans, Metcalfe, Osgoode, Kemptville, Manotick, Greely, and Russell. “We are a specialized group because we are working to go to Europe this summer,” Cross said. The Guides themselves got to plan the itinerary for the August excursion. They focused their attention on stops in France, Germany, Belgium and Netherlands, with visits to Vimy Ridge, Flanders Fields, and other historic sites that marked important moments in the two World Wars. They also want to visit the Anne Frank House in Am- sterdam, as well as take in a few cultural sites. Travel cost for each group member is es- timated at $3600. After everyone receives their share of all the fundraising projects, they all have to make up any remaining ex- pense money needed for the trip. The e-cycling fair on May 4 ended with two-and-a-half dumpster loads of used and surplus electronics gear carted off for sal- vage. The Guides of Detinu Travel Group are now working on new ideas for fundraising before the start of summer.
