get stations responded. Staff evacuated all of the children without fuss to the play- ground behind the school and fire fighters went inside to do a room-by-room search. Four went up on the roof with a thermal scanner. The smell was traced to a rooftop motor unit. After venting a couple of rooms in the school, fire fighters allowed the students and staff to return inside without further incident. District Chief Luc Chayer of Station Three commended the school staff and students for a quick and effective evacuation of the premises when the alarm sounded.

HAMMOND | An alert teacher with a keen nose helped local fire fighters to track down a funny smell. One of the staff at Pope John Paul II Catholic Elementary School in Hammond noticed an odd “vanilla” smell in one of the rooms at the school around noon on May 1.
