KEEP ON SOWING A Christian, travelling in a steam boat, distributed tracts. While they were taken and read by many, a gen tleman took one, and folding it up, cut it with his penknife into small pieces; then holding it up in derision, threw it away. One piece adhered to his coat; he picked it off, and, looking at it, saw only the word “God.” He turned it over; on the other side, was printed “Eternity.” They stood out as living words before him. “God” — “Eternity.” He went to the bar, called for brandy to drink to drive them away, but in vain. Then he went to the gamblingtable, to social intercourse and conversation; b u t those solemn words haunted him wherever he went, until he was brought a penitent to the feet of Jesus. What an encouragement to the Christian traveller to sow seed by the wayside! NO COMPLAINT A pastor had on his desk a note book labeled, “Complaints of Members Against Members.” When one of his people called to tell him the faults of another, he would say, “Well, here’s my Com plaint Book. I’ll write down what you say, and you can sign it. Then when I have to take the matter up official ly, I shall know how I may expect you to testify.” The sight of the open book and the ready pen had its effect. “Oh no, I could not sign anything like that.” And no entry was made. The minister says he kept the book for forty years, opened it probably a thousand times, and never wrote a line in it. TIME IS RUNNING OUT The average age of the world’s great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations progressed through this sequence: From Bondage to Spiritual Faith From Spiritual Faith to Great Cour age From Courage to Liberty From Liberty to Abundance From Abundance to Selfishness From Selfishness to Complacency From Complacency to Apathy From Apathy to Dependency ; From Dependency back again into Bondage. In 16 years our United States will be 200 years old. This cycle is not inevitable. “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the dav of salvation” (II Cor. 6:2).
