alumni news by Inez McGahey Sam Stern ’60 is working among God’s chosen people in Brooklyn, New York, where he and his wife reside. He is also editor of The Way, a publication for Jewish evangelism. Ruth ’42 and Herbert ’42, ’44 Bess live in Winona Lake, Indiana. Herb, who is a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Grace Theological Seminary, received his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Uni­ versity of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michi­ gan. Professor Bess completed his work in Near Eastern studies, his major field being ancient Near Eastern languages and litera­ ture, with his doctoral dissertation entitled, “ Systems of Land Tenure in Ancient Is­ rael.” Ruth has been employed full time in a local Christian office since Herb’s return from his year of study in the Holy Land in 1960. A l and Ruth (Wilder ’47) Rohrbaugh and family are home on furlough from Naples, Italy. They serve with the Con­ servative Baptist Foreign Mission Society in the “ land of opportunity in a changing world.” Jack ’50 and Linda (Woelk ’47, ’50 SMM) Henderson, Ghana, West Africa: “ Last year we had one couple . . . and now there are twenty-nine adults and twenty children, and we are still growing. Next year Eastern Nigeria is the challenge of us here under Wycliffe Bible Transla­ tors. Please pray for us in the hard, gruelling, tedious job of learning to Speak and write a hitherto unwritten language.” Howard ’61 and Shirley (Morgan ’62) Bowman, Glendale, California: “ The Lord has blessed in our deputation this far. We have approximately one-fourth of our fi­ nancial support promised. . . . The Lord willing, we plan to leave for Colombia, South America. . . . Margery Dawn was born October 22.” The Bowmans are with Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. Thais Good ’49 is in Addis Ababa, Ethi­ opia, with Sudan Interior Mission. “ Exact­ ly twelve years from my first sailing, we slid out of the world’s most dramatic har­ bor. . . This time I am to live and work in Addis Ababa instead of the hinterland. . . . I am teaching in a school for girls only, grades 1 to 8. There are 338 of them, including seventy boarders. Most of my classes are with the thirty-four seventh graders . . . and will include Bible, Eng­ lish, History, etc. There is also the train­ ing of the girls who have Sunday schools off the compound. W e have a tremendous responsibility.” Carolyn (McCormick ’42) and Paul Lon­ don, Sudan Interior Mission, Jos, Nigeria: “ Recording out here has some problems that are different! Hawa, the woman who makes our Hausa women’s program, has to bring her eight-month old baby with her. . . . One of our Hausa evangelists . . . says that when he visits one of the large towns he makes it a point to visit the chief judge at broadcast time. The judge turns ELWA on, and all the people in his entry hut listen to the Gospel. MAY, 1964
