No closures planned for health unit offices

The bad news for the regional health unit is that it is a victim of provincial spending restraint measures. The good news is that staff are working on a plan to guarantee that the doors stay open at local district health offices and that all current public health services remain available as usual. “We aren’t closing, we aren’t leaving,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, chief medical health officer for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU). Last month the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) expressed concern about how provincial budgeting plans might be affecting the EOHU’s own op- erations budget plan.The province provides the lion’s share of EOHU operating revenue at about $9.4million this year, with the Five Counties and City of Cornwall providing the remaining quarter of the $12.5 million EOHU budget. Dr. Roumeliotis confirmed, during a March 6 phone interview, that the provincial funding has been restricted during the past few years, though this year there was a 0.6 per cent increase in the provincial support fund. He also observed that inflation for most of the EOHU’s operation costs well exceed that minimal increase. Still, Roumeliotis noted, the 0.6 per cent increase is a result of a recent provincial review that noted that the EOHU is one of

existing services programs and keeping local district health unit offices open. “The district offices are important to us,” Dr. Roumeliotis said. “There is no question of closing any of them.” In-house programs like vaccinations, water quality testing, and other services will continue at district offices. EOHU staff will make greater use of mobile-technology
systems, where feasible, for some services that do not require residents to go to the district office. Dr. Roumeliotis said the overall cost- effectiveness plan should be in place by next year. “The public outside should not be affected at all,” he said. “We are not closing. We’re maintaining our local operations.”
Un homme de Limoges accusé de vol à main armée

La Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO) du comté de Russell a arrêté un homme de Limoges en lien avec deux vols à main armée à la Caisse populaire des villages de Hammond et de Limoges. Enrique Elpidio Garcia, 33 ans, de Li- moges, a été arrêté le 1 er mars, et devra ré- pondre à un total de 16 accusations, dont deux pour vol à main armée, possession d’une arme à des fins dangereuses, utili- sation d’un déguisement avec intention de commettre un crime et pointage d’une arme. Des accusations uniques ont aussi été portées concernant le port d’une arme dissi- mulée, l’utilisation imprudente d’une arme à feu et la possession de biens volés d’une valeur de moins de 5000 $. L’arrestation et les accusations découlent de l’enquête de la PPO sur deux vols àmain armée commis récemment dans des caisses populaires du comté de Russell. Personne n’a été blessé lors de ces évé- nements. Le 25 janvier, en fin d’après-midi, à la Caisse populaire Trillium de Hammond, un montant non divulgué a été dérobé par un homme masqué et armé, qui a ensuite fui la scène à pied. Le 15 février, également en fin d’après-mi- di, la Caisse populaire Trilliumde Limoges, a été braquée par un hommemasqué armé, qui a fui la scène à pied avec une somme d’argent non dévoilée.

The CCTV system at the Caisse populaire Trillium inHammond caught an image of the masked and armed robber who held up the local caisse on Jan. 25. The same suspect is believed responsible for a similar armed robbery at the Caisse populaire Trillium in Limoges on Feb. 15. Police have arrested Enrique Elpidio Garcia, 33, of Limoges, and filed a total of 16 charges against him in relation to both robberies. Garcia remains in OPP custody pending a March 9 bail hearing at L’Orignal provincial court. —photo provided
