COMMENCEMENT All degree requirements must be completed before the student may participate in commencement ceremonies. Those who complete their degree requirements during interterm or summer sessionmust register in a nonresident status for the following semester, with graduation scheduled at the timeof the next commence­ ment. In such coses no tuition is charged. It is expected that all graduating students will be present at commencement ceremonies except in coses of extreme emergency or other similarly difficult circumstances. Permission ta graduatein absentia must be secured from the director of records well in advance. Writing Competency Exam Biol □ University agrees with thecurrent emphasis in American higher education on the need for college graduates to be able to express themselves appropriately and effectively in writing. The ski lls learned in ENG 11 0 Criticism & Composition need ta be practiced to be maintained, not only as ameans of communication, but as a means of learning as well; therefore, Biol □ encourages the use of writing whenever poss ible in every discipline throughout the student's undergraduate career. At a minimum of one year after taking ENG 110 A& Band at least three semesters before graduation - preferably during the first semester of the iunior year - each student must take and pass the WritingCompetency Exam (WCE) to confirm that writing skills have been maintained. Students who do not pass the exam should as soon as possible avail themselves of one of the following options for achieving competency: (l ) Take advantage of individual or group tutoring opportunities in the Writing Lab in Sutherland Hall, Room 211, in preparation for re-taking the exam. The student will payafee of $25 for re-taking the WCE. If option l ischosen and the WCE is failed the second time, the student must take option 2. (2) Enroll in ENG 210 Writing for Competency. Agrade of C + or better in this course will fulfill competency requirements . Students are expected to complete the ENG 210 A&Brequirement in their first year at B i o l □. Neither the Writing Competency Examnor ENG 210 con be substituted for the ENG 210 requ irement. l . All baccalaureate degrees require aminimum of 130 semester units of cred it for graduation. Each m □ ior consists of a minimumof 30 units of which 24 must be upper division. The Bachelor of Music degree requires 140 units. A degree in biological science requires 135 units and nursing, 142 units. For specific major requirements please see indicated m □ ior listings. 2. Writing competency is arequirement of graduation for all students who enter the university as freshmen beginning with fal l semester 1986 and who will be graduating in 1989-90 or later. Writing competency is arequirement for graduation for all incoming transfer studentswho will be graduating in 1989-90 or later. The first administration of the exam will be in 1988-89. 3. Completion of all academic requi rements and approval of the student's gradua­ tion petition by the m □ ior advisor and the director of records a year before graduation. 4. Aminimum of thirty unitsmust be taken at Biol □ University, including at least fifteen units (upper division level) in the m□ ior field. Extension credit or credit by examination may not be used to fulfill theminimumresidence requirement of 30 semester units. Students desiring aminor, see paragraph above on minors. 5. A"(" average (or a2.00 grade point average) is requ ired on all work taken at Biol □ University and within the m □ ior field. 6. All course work during the final semester which will be applied toward graduation requirements must be taken at Biol □ University. 7. All co rrespondence course work must be completed and an official transcript received by the office of admissions and records before the senior year, or two semesters prior to graduation. REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL BACCALAUREATE DEGREES Special Note: All graduation requirements may be met within four school years by carrying approximately 16 or 17 units each semester. Astudent may st ill be graduated within four years if he wishes to take alighter load and will enroll in summer session and/or interterm.
