Department of Music Jack Schwarz, D.M.A. , Chair FACULTY Professors: Lock, Schwarz , Unfreid, Wong Associate Professors: Childs , Lutke , Wall, Wiebe Assistant Professors: Anderson , Johnson, Lak, Liesch Instructor: Schweitzer The objectives of the music department are: I) to provide oppor­ tunities for all students to study music as an essential part of a liberal education; 2) to serve as a professional school preparing music specialists for teaching, graduate study, performance , the ministry of church music and other careers in music ; and 3) to prepare all of our graduates for effective contribution to the musical life of the evangelical church. Entrance Requirements: All students seeking admission must demonstrate musical background and performance strengths necessary for successful completion of the stated curriculum. Provisional acceptance is granted for the first year of study. Upon entrance, students will be given placement exams and auditions in music theory, keyboard skills and performance . Specific information concerning the content of these examina­ tions and suggestions for preparation are available by writing the music department office. The placement examinations are given for the purpose of deter­ mining proper placement in music courses. Activities: The music department provides opportunities for ex­ perience in several types of vocal and instrumental ensembles , including the Biota Chorale, Chamber Music Ensembles, Uni­ versity Singers, Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Band. All are open to non-music majors as well as music majors by audition at the beginning of each semester. Individual performance opportunities are offered through weekly student recitals, weekly music-at-noon concerts and junior and senior recitals. The music department concert series features qutstanding guest artists as well as its own widely-known faculty. Opportunities offCampus: The stature of Los Angeles as a music center provides exceptional opportunities for hearing the world's leading artists, as well as outstanding college and church mu sic organizations. Service Opportunities: The Los Angeles metropolitan area fur­ nishes many opportunities for remunerative service in music. There are frequent openings for competent organists, church choir directors , soloists, accompanists and instrumentalists.

Scholarships: Music scho larships and performance awards in varying amounts are available to qualified students. Majors: A professional degree (Bachelor of Music) is offered with emphasis in one of the following areas : applied music , composition and music education. Students interested in pursuing one of these emphases must demonstrate a high level of perform­ ance potential and commitment to music as a profession . A non-professional degree (Bachelor of Arts) with a major in music is also offered. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree are exempt from the general education requirement in foreign language , literature and fine arts , and need take only five units in mathematics and /or science. All music majors must complete a basic core of 36 units of music which consists of the follow ing: 60C , 105 , 111 , 112 , 117 , 206, 211,212 , 215,216 , 304 , 311 , 312 , 315 , 323,340(4) , 405 , 440.
