So, I emphasize the importance of making an effort to build trust with your key stakeholders. Because the better the partnership, the smoother the payroll process will go. I tell people to stay organized and build strong processes so you can always be on top of your workload. It’s important to know how to put people in place who have the professional knowledge to make sure everything is properly compliant. Payroll comes in waves. There are times when you can catch your breath, but there always are the payroll cut-off dates, and then it gets super busy--but don’t freak out. Just stay on top of the wave and don’t get behind it. GPA: What are some of the biggest technological changes to payroll operations that you have seen? Ramona Greenhalgh: The adoption of cloud-based HR and payroll tools, and automating payroll inputs have been significant developments for my payroll operations. The ability
to standardize workflows, the integrations of the HR tools with time management and with the payroll system also have been impactful. Now, more automated validations are being done. The development of reporting dashboards has been a really good thing as well. Of course, we have adopted employee self-service, which is now standard. Employees have the ability to access their payslips on a device, and even yearly tax statements and social security statements--all from a portal. Also, moving from email for questions and issues to ticketing systems has been a big change. There’s more work to be done, but using AI for identifying simpler Payroll is a team sport, and success really depends on strong collaboration across the business.
