How have you found juggling work with your study days?
Balancing work and study is manageable, particularly because my study day is ringfenced. There are occasions where I must complete a work task, but there’s an understanding across teams that the study day is dedicated to university learning. While it took time to adjust and get into the rhythm of balancing both responsibilities, I’ve found that completing preparation work little and often for my lectures helps.
What’s the most enjoyable aspect of being an apprentice?
I particularly enjoy the practical experience that comes with being an apprentice. I can rotate through practice areas and gain exposure to various departments, which has helped me identify the areas that interest me.
How has AI impacted the work you do as a solicitor apprentice?
While I wouldn’t say I use AI daily, it’s useful for sifting through many documents to find a reference or to summarise information. Senior colleagues also recognise the use of AI and will request straightforward tasks to be completed with AI as an aid. Overall, AI has helped to improve my productivity.
What advice would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
I’d first emphasise the importance of researching the firms you’re applying for; note down the key aspects and characteristics of each firm that resonates with you (eg, the culture, practice areas or opportunities). The apprenticeship route requires a long-term commitment and dedication, so compatibility is essential.
