K-M Program Guide 2024

K-M Scout Ranch Program Guide 2024

Montana Council

Welcome to K-M Scout Ranch! We’re excited to host you and your Scouts for an amazing week. We encourage you to review this guide and share the information with Scouts and families. Our staff has prepared for merit badge and activity instruction to ensure your Scouts both meet the badge requirements and have fun! All merit badge sign-ups are online! K-M does not use blue cards. Our registration system allows you to select badges for your Scouts, pay any associated fees, review prerequisite requirements, download and print schedules and advancement reports, and upload final badge information into your unit’s Scoutbook account. You can also give parents direct access to select badges and pay fees using the “Parent Portal”. More information on these features will be available on our website and at camp.

New Merit Badges and Programs in 2024 New Badges: Exploration, Nature, Orienteering

New Programs: Kendall Days: K-M Scout Ranch has our very own mining ghost town site, Kendall, Montana, and we’re excited to have completely overhauled our Kendall Days program! On Friday mornings, the entire camp will celebrate “Kendall Days,” which was an annual tradition for the old mining town. Scouts will participate in traditional games and activities, as well as learn about the Kendall town history. All Scouts and Scouters are encouraged to wear “western” or “miner” clothing for this special event. Program and Merit Badges K-M offers a variety of program areas where Scouts may earn merit badges, learn and hone their scout skills, and have fun.

• Aquatics • Nature • Climbing • Shooting Sports • Scoutcraft • STEM • The Tracks

Most badges can be started and completed at camp, but the completion of requirements is subject to many factors including unforeseen weather, attendance, effort outside of badge time, and the satisfactory completion of merit badge requirements. Some badges require that the Scout complete requirements prior to arrival at camp. Prerequisites are listed with the description of each merit

badge. In addition, some requirements can’t be completed at camp. These are also listed with each badge. Occasionally, adjustments to program offerings need to be made to accommodate changes in staffing, facility availability, and total registration numbers. Every effort will be made to inform units of these changes as early as possible and the program director will be available to assist units in adjusting to these changes. Age / Size Appropriate Badges K-M does not place age restrictions on participation outside those created by the Guide to Safe Scouting. We do however recognize that age, size, and experience may impact a Scout’s success with certain badges and activities. For example: the size and strength required to shoot a shotgun, using large tools and lumber in Pioneering or attempting Wilderness Survival before completing the knot and fire-building requirements leading up to Second Class. Recommendations are noted in course descriptions. While not required, we urge you to specifically consider these suggestions as you plan your visit to K-M and create your daily schedule. Registration Registration for merit badges, and activities will be available online through ScoutingEvent.com. Information will be sent to the specified unit leader when registration opens. Pre-registering allows Scouts to participate in programs that interest them and helps the camp prepare quality programs for each Scout. Space in each program is limited, so leaders should be prepared with acceptable back-up choices for each Scout when registering. Limited adjustments may be accommodated upon arrival at camp. Scouts will attend the same badges each day Monday through Thursday. There are 50-minute and 80-minute badges. Scouts may take any combination of badges, which may result in some free time. Scouts may not sign up for overlapping badge times. Badge lengths are indicated on the program schedule. Additional Fees

In an effort to reduce costs for the average camper, additional fees may be allotted for activities that require consumable resources. These will be reflected and charged directly to your troop’s online account and include the following programs.

• Basketry: • Electronics: $10 • Leatherwork: $10 $15

• Space Exploration: $10 • Wood Carving: $10 • ATV Certification: $25

Blue Cards Merit badge “Blue Cards” are not needed or utilized at K-M. At the end of your week, unit leaders will receive merit badge reports indicating partials and completions. Blue cards can also be printed via your online registration once counselors have entered completion information. Scoutingevent.com offers a variety of reports including merit badge records and a file to download directly into

your unit’s Scoutbook account. Additional Programs Additional Open Program Areas

Monday-Thursday after merit badges end, Scouts will have an opportunity to explore our camp and program areas. Scouts can swim, boat or fish in Taylor Lake, shoot rifle, archery or shotgun, mountain bike, climb our tower, or participate in several other activities around camp. No pre-sign-up is needed for these “free time” activities. Evening Program Evening program includes a camp-wide offering and a rotation of open program areas. A schedule will be provided at the SPL/Leader’s meeting each week. Open program areas will include shooting sports, aquatics, and climbing. Scouts have the opportunity to participate in the activities available in these areas during open program time during evening program. Friday Program Program on Friday at K-M looks different than every other day. Friday morning camp program will be held at our on-sit Kendall town site. Scouts will participate in games and activities while exploring this unique part of K-M’s rich history. Friday afternoon is reserved for merit badge make-up time. All program areas will be open for Scouts to finish any outstanding merit badge requirements.

Adult Program Adult programs and training opportunities are being developed and will be announced closer to the start of camp. Kendall Ghost-Post Units have the opportunity to do a unit-run outpost to spend the night in the ghost town of Kendall, Montana. The ghost-post will be coordinated with camp administration upon request. Units can use our Kendall campsite tents or sleep out under the stars. Adult supervision of this opportunity must be facilitated by unit leadership. The unit will sign-out at the office for the evening, and sign-in the next day upon return to the main camp facility. Polar Plunge Ready for an early morning dip in Taylor Lake? Our aquatics staff will offer this frigid opportunity on Wednesdays mornings at 6:00 each week. Program Descriptions Merit Badge Prerequisite Requirements Please note that some merit badges have prerequisite requirements that the Scout must complete away from camp. Prerequisite requirement details will be posted on our website resources. Most of these have to do with planning and executing requirements at home or time periods beyond that available at camp. Aquatics Taylor Lake is an excellent place to relax, have fun, and cool off on a hot summer day. Note: Scouts must be BSA Swimmers to take Swimming Area badges. Scout-appropriate swimwear is required. Due to the rocky shoreline, water shoes are recommended for boating and swimming activities.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Instructional Swim: This class is intended as an instructional time for Scouts who did not pass their BSA swimmer test or whose swimming skills are in need of more assistance.

Mile Swim: Scouts participating in the Mile Swim Award must attend the designated time for mile swim each morning. This happens before morning flags and typically lasts 20-40 minutes. Participants who complete the one mile course on the last day are entitled to receive the Mile Swim BSA wallet card and patch. You must pass the BSA Swimmer test to participate in Mile Swim.

Open Swimming and Boating: Scouts can enjoy our lake during open program times. We offer kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.

Scoutcraft The heart of traditional camping programs lies in the learning of basic outdoor skills. At K-M we seek to instill a love of the outdoors and an appreciation for active contributions to its stewardship. We teach and use the principles of Outdoor Code, Leave No Trace, Totin’ Chip, Firem’n Chit, Conservation, and other basic outdoor skills. We offer skill instruction for a wide range of outdoor merit badges.

Shark Tank: Based on CNBC’s hit show “Shark Tank” in which entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas for investment, Scouts will take their shot at an entrepreneurial idea of their own! They will learn how to develop a business plan and how to pitch it. While covering several requirements from the Communication, Entrepreneurship, and Salesmanship merit badges, this program is designed more as a fun experience instead of focusing on advancement. First Year Camper This program is designed to serve as a foundation for rank advancement in Scouts BSA. Scouts learn outdoor skills while working through rank requirements for Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks. The First Year Camper program takes place every morning Monday-Thursday from 9am-noon. Registered Scouts will need to attend every day. Please note that K-M staff does not “sign off” rank requirements. It is the unit’s responsibility to confirm and approve that individual Scouts have met the requirements.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Cowboy Action Shooting In the BSA, this activity can only be offered at Summer Camp! All participants must be 14 years of age or older to take part in this special shooting experience with opportunities to shoot single- action .22-caliber pistols, lever action .22-caliber rifles, and 12-gauge or 20-gauge shotguns. In various old-time western scenarios, Scouts play “good guys” who prove their accuracy by shooting at things like spinning metal targets where they hit the spinner to “ring the bell.” Prerequisites: Must be at least 14 years old and have parent-signed permission slip. Open Shooting During open program times, Scouts can try out rifle, archery, and shotgun shooting.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Endeavoring to stay at the edge of modern merit badge classes and emerging technology, K-M’s STEM lab is a great place for Scouts to learn and explore. Despite being remote, you can still enjoy many of life’s technological luxuries.

Climbing K-M Scout Ranch’s Climbing tower sits high on the property and gives Scouts amazing views as they climb or rappel. Different levels of climbing “routes” can be tried, as well as opportunities for Scouts to rappel. OTHER ACTIVITIES Open Climbing - Scouts can try their climbing skills during open program times. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. The Tracks The Tracks area at K-M includes mountain biking and ATVs. Cycling

With our rugged terrain and rolling hills, K-M makes for some exciting mountain

biking! In this activity, Scouts will learn how to care for and repair their own bicycles. What’s more, they’ll get to bike around camp, including a track that takes them deep into the undeveloped areas of camp. Mountain bikes and helmets are provided by K-M. This activity completes parts of the Cycling merit badge (which is an optional Eagle Required merit badge).

ATV Certification In this activity, Scouts will not only learn the fundamentals of safe ATV usage, they will earn certification to prove their knowledge! Once they have proven mastery on our terraces, Scouts will be guided through multiple tracks that careen deep into camp and through some old homesteads. This activity requires participants to be 14 or older. All youth participants are required to have a signed waiver from their parent or guardian prior to participating in the ATV programs. These forms will be available on the council website or at the camp office. In addition, participants must complete the online ATV rider course prior to arriving at camp. The online “S-Course” can be accessed using this link: https://atvsafety.org/ atv-ecourse/ Participants must provide the ATV instructor with evidence of completion of the online course.

Proper clothing at the ATV course is a must. If the instructor believes a Scout or Scouter arrives improperly dressed they will be unable to participate. The diagram below shows what proper clothing is expected. Gloves, helmets, and goggles are provided but individuals are encouraged to bring their own. Use of personal protective equipment is at the instructor’s discretion.
