He noted that recent estimates put the cost of bringing all roads within the municipality up to first-class standards, including pavement, at about $10 million.

Peter Barton will seek a seat on Champlain Township council for the Vankleek Hill ward. Barton, the son of Gary Barton, the township’s current mayor, explained that family and community are part of the rea- sons for his decision to run in this fall’s municipal election. After a childhood spent growing up in Vankleek Hill, Barton moved away to Ottawa for school and work, but later returned to the village he still thought of as home, to raise his family. “I would love to help create an opportunity for my kids to be able to move away and then come back to this community and live and succeed,” Barton said during a phone interview, May 14. Barton continues to work in Ottawa as one of the senior executive members of the Fire Service department. He is also a certified paramedic and, for the past eight years, has also worked as an advocate to UIF8PSLFST$PNQFOTBUJPO#PBSE 8$# on behalf of workers seeking compensation or support for injuries or illnesses suffered while on the job. )FIBTTJODFTUFQQFEEPXOGSPNIJT8$# advocacy post so that he could have more time with his family and also become more involved with his home community. Part of that involvement includes taking a more active role in local political decisions which affect the community. “I think it’s my time,” he said, “and I’ve been thinking about this for a while.” &/#3&'r#3*&'4 UCDSB CHAIRMAN STEPS DOWN Jeff McMillan won’t seek re-elec- tion this fall for his seat on the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). McMillan plans to finish out his term as the current board chair- man and trustee for Ward 5 (Brockville and Augusta Township). That term ends Nov. 30. Stephen Sliwa, UCDSB education director and board secre- tary, confirmed the announcement in an April 23 media release. At present, the municipality does not have the borrowing capacity and is limited to annual maintenance and small-scale improvement allocations within its annual capital works budget. The township also ap- plies for senior government subsidies when infrastructure aid programs are available for municipalities, but it is also competing with other rural and urban municipalities for priority recognition. “So that’s a real big challenge,” Barton said, “dealing with the provincial government on this issue.”
