GIFT CARD SCAM GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Hawkesbury OPP warns residents of a gift card scam, which has shown up in the area. Someone has placed false barcodes on some of the blank gift cards in local stores, which have them on display for purchase. These blank cards do not work until a specific value is assigned to them when they are purchased. 8IFOUIFQIPOZCBSDPEFJTTDBOOFE on these doctored gift cards to activate them, the money value assigned to them, from the user’s own bank account, goes into the scammer’s own account instead. Anyone who suspects they have bought a doctored gift card should contact both the police and the store where they bought the card.

The United Counties of Prescott- Russell do not have reserve funds of $120,215,826. That is one detail that the counties’ finance director wants to correct. “I would like to clarify some information that you mentioned in the article that is misleading,” stated Julie Ménard-Brault, in an email concerning an article in the May FEJUJPOPGUIF5SJCVOF&YQSFTTBOEPUIFS &"1QBQFST The article, titled Big Surplus in Coun- ties Finance Report, stated that the 2017 financial statement from the Deloitte ac- counting firm, for the United Counties of 1SFTDPUU3VTTFMM 6$13 SFQPSUFEUIFDPVO - ties finished 2017 with $120,215,826 in its total accumulated surplus reserve fund, and that the fund is available for the counties to draw on for various special programs or projects or major investments. It represents the total value invested in capital assets that decreases as the capital assets depreciate as they get older.
