MARCH 2023

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA It is March in Minnesota: Will it come in like a lion or a lamb? One thing I do know is that at TPT, March means on-air pledge. As a non-profit media organization committed to serving our community, TPT relies on our members and donors for support. Public media is a local, independent, and trusted source of programming created for and with the community, and our over-the-air broadcast is offered free of charge. Our pledge drives serve as an important source of support, and we hope you will tune in for some great new programs — including live cooking shows from TPT’s studios on March 4. March is also Women’s History Month, and we have programming celebrating some exemplary women. I am looking forward to American Experience: Becoming Helen Keller on Monday, March 20 at 9 p.m. on TPT 2. This biography recounts the complex life and legacy of the author, advocate, and human rights pioneer. On March 27 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2, Minnesota Experience will kick off a six-week run with Citizen , a documentary that explores Minnesota women’s fight for the right to vote. We close out the month on March 31 at 9 p.m. on TPT 2 with American Masters: Roberta Flack, an intimate look into Flack's artistry, life, and triumphs over racism and sexism within and outside the recording industry. Your contribution to TPT is an investment in education, arts, culture, history, public affairs, and critical health and safety information for all members of our community. Thank you for supporting access to public media and thank you for investing in TPT.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

THE BEST OF MINNESOTA EXPERIENCE

STEAMSHIP AMERICA A North Shore Legend

APR 10

APR 3

MAR 27

CITIZEN chronicle of Minnesotans’ role in achieving the 19th Amendment also suggests that the 70 plus years of activism was itself an important badge of change and true democracy.

Minnesota's North Shore was once connected by water—specifically a fleet of sailing vessels and steamers that hauled mail, fish, freight and passengers to communities up and down the remote coastline. The Steamer America was a star in the early 1900s, with her speed and relative luxury she became a vital lifeline and a friend to many. Produced by WDSE, Duluth.

FLOUR POWER explores how milling made Minnesota. The story charts the growth of wheat farming, the harnessing of water power, the founders of the flour milling industry, and the expansion of the industry into global purveyors of industrialized food product.

In the 1970s, young people in Minnesota radicalized by the Vietnam War created a unique alternative economy featuring dozens of food cooperatives, but a shadowy revolutionary group used conflicts over class and race to try to seize the movement. The ensuing clash pitted friends and comrades in a sometimes violent conflict over the future of the counterculture.

THE BALDIES were a Minneapolis skinhead crew but not quite what you would picture. Through organization and activism, they fought neo-nazis in the 1980s and became an example of countercul- tural groups against racism.

BECOMING BIG LEAGUE explores how sport was changing in 1960 and how that changed Minnesota. From Olympic hockey to High School hoops, from pro-sports origins in Big Ten titles, Becoming Big League is a retro sports page come to life that illustrates how 1960 might be the most dynamic year in Minnesota Sports history. Watching My Mother Create Art By Leslie Hunter-Gadsden

Long before community organizations and parents pressed school districts to bring art back into classrooms, my mother taught me that art was important. Growing up in New York City during the 1970s in an apartment in Washington Heights with my mom meant there was either jazz, rhythm and blues or classical music on the stereo, and an easel with oil paint, watercolors or a sketchpad out as she completed college art assignments. She did this while raising me and holding down a full-time job as a public-school secretary. Later, she went back to college to earn her master's degree and became a high school business education teacher. When my mom put herself through college at night, she decided to study something that she loved — visual art. To be honest, Catherine W. Hunter loved all forms of art. Dance, music, theater, writing, sketching, painting, sculpting and even sewing. She exposed me to these art forms at an early age and scrimped and saved so I could take my beloved dance classes from the age of four.

Self-portrait by Catherine W. Hunter

From the time I was about five until I was 15, she focused on getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts from City College. It became our norm to take weekend trips to museums. Often, she took along a sketch pad, and in mimicking her, I took along mine as well. She would tell me about the painters she was studying whether it was during the Impressionist period, or Modern art from Picasso. She opened my eyes to the work of Jacob Lawrence, just as she played jazz music by Miles Davis or Sarah Vaughn and classical music by Tchaikovsky. Mom wanted me to know that artists came in all ethnicities and genders.

When my mom put herself through college at night, she decided to study something that she loved – visual art.

Watching her throughout my childhood made me believe that I too could express myself artistically.

A Black woman who had graduated from high school in 1950, my mom found a way to take a leave from her secretarial job in 1955, so she could travel to Europe at 22 and study at the University of Florence for three months.

Fitness Influencer Joan MacDonald: It’s Not Too Late to Embrace a Healthier Life By Lisa B. Samalonis

Seventy-five-year-old Joan MacDonald (right) transformed her body and life over the last five years — going from overweight and on several medications to drug-free and fit. In the process, she became an Instagram fitness influencer. “My body was breaking down,” said MacDonald, who had edema, low energy, and was on numerous medicines for arthritis, high blood pressure, and acid reflux. “I had to have a conversation with myself: ‘You are not happy with life; you need to change,’” MacDonald said, adding she knew that her daughter Michelle, a strength and conditioning specialist, had improved her own health and the lives of many others. Working with Michelle, MacDonald became stronger, healthier, and more energetic. “I had to have a conversation with myself: You are not happy with life; you need to change.” Despite the TrainWithJoan Instagram page, where she posts her workouts and meals, having more than 1.7 million followers, she doesn't consider herself a celebrity. Next Avenue: What advice do you give people concerned about their health but who don't know where to start? Joan MacDonald: Start by getting up and moving. As we get older, we tend to believe the myth that once you reach 40, forget it. But that is not true. People should only jump into some things at a time. Take it slow to avoid injury. Are you in a hurry? This is the rest of your life we are talking about. Let it just

come as you are learning. Don’t expect miracles in the beginning.

Next Avenue: Did you ever get discouraged?

Joan MacDonald: Yes. My worst problems with motivation were during the first year. I wanted to be done. I didn't realize there was no ‘done.’ It’s a change you make in your whole life. It's just how you do things now. When I don't feel like working out — those feelings are fleeting.

Next Avenue: Did you think you were too old to make this change?

Joan MacDonald: I never let my age factor in trying to do this. Some people think you must be a certain way as you age. But why can’t we be what we want to be? We are not hurting anybody, and we are making ourselves healthier.
