NOVEMBER 2018

ONGRATITUDE

Earlier in the fall, my wife and I got a letter in the mail. It was a letter we had been waiting for for some time — a letter from the insurance company. The letter would either approve or deny coverage for our son’s Spinraza injection. Our son, Benjamin, was a candidate for Spinraza injections. The medication is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy, as it stops the progression of the disorder and even offers hope of bringing back some of his lost mobility. It has the potential to change Benjamin’s future for the better. We opened the letter. Benjamin was approved! A single Spinraza injection costs $125,000, and with this approval, the insurance pays for every bit of it. Benjamin will need another injection every four months in order for him to at least maintain his current mobility level. It goes without saying that approval from our insurance company is a game changer, and I couldn’t be more grateful. And I’m grateful for so many things. I’m grateful for my son and now his treatment. I’m grateful for my family. I’m grateful I live and work in a free country. And on work, I’m grateful for the work I get to do at Mometrix. It’s meaningful, and when it comes to jobs and careers, it can be hard to find work that genuinely feels meaningful. One of the reasons working with Mometrix is as meaningful as it is goes back to the days before I worked here — back to when I used one of their products for myself. I was trying to get into grad school, and a Mometrix study guide came to the rescue. By using a Mometrix product, I was propelled to the next chapter of my life (which, as it happened, was working at Mometrix!). Looking back, it was quite the trip getting to where I am today. In many ways, it was providence that I was blessed with the opportunity to join the team at Mometrix. Things lined up just right and I’m extremely grateful. Because I know how much they helped me, I know how they can help others. Whether it’s getting into grad school, med school, law school, or getting a certification, Mometrix has helped all kinds of people reach the next chapter of their lives. There is something remarkable about helping people achieve their vision — that next chapter, and beyond.

I come to work knowing I’m helping people accomplish their goals. In a small way, I get to be part of their greater journey. I’m grateful for that, the company behind it, and so many of the people at Mometrix who make it all possible. Mometrix truly lives their culture of helping people grow to become their best possible selves. And regarding the notion of becoming your best possible self, I’m extremely grateful for my wife. She helps keep me grounded when I dream a little too big. When you have an active imagination, it helps to have someone who can bring you back down to earth. She’s there to help me focus on my big ideas and add a dose of reality. Of course, she’s supportive in so many other ways, too! Perhaps in the most important way, she’s an amazing mother to our children and a huge blessing in our lives. As you gather with family and friends this season, I encourage you to think about what you’re grateful for and share it with others. Gratitude is an important part of life — a chance to shine a light on what’s good.

THE REALWAY TOBOOST YOURBRAINPOWER

Thanksgiving is a time to express your gratitude to the people in your life. During this time of year, plenty of companies talk about how thankful they are for their clients. But more often than not, to those clients, words of thanks feel like just another sales gimmick. If you want to show your clients how much they mean to you, here are a few ways you can express that thanks authentically. Send a Thank-You Note Getting a letter in the mail is a nice feeling. Taking the time to send a client a handwritten letter is the kind of pleasant surprise that really makes someone feel good. Obviously, a handwritten note will take more time to craft than an email, so it’s okay to send fewer notes in order to really make an impact. Find some tips for writing awesome thank-you notes at Helpscout.net/blog/how-to-write-a-killer- thank-you-note . Give the Gift of Food We all need to eat, so what better way to say thank you than with a sweet treat? You may not be aware of any unique dietary restrictions your client may have, so it’s best to play it safe. A tin of cookies or some peppermint bark will delight almost anyone, but if your client is a fitness company, they may prefer a healthier treat, like a fruit basket. Donate to a Client’s Favorite Charity A great way to show that you care is by helping a client give to their favorite charity or cause. If you happen to know a charity near and dear to their heart, you can The marketplace is flooded with supplements claiming to boost brainpower, increase cognition, and reduce the effects of aging on your brain. The reality is that boosting your brainpower is actually pretty easy — you don’t have to put any potentially harmful substances in your body to reap the rewards. How we live can have a huge impact on the way our brain ages, performs cognitive functions, and remembers things. A 2014 study published by the University of Tübingen in Germany found that brain function may slow down as we age, but certain cognitive skills and abilities don’t automatically follow suit. Essentially, the brain has the ability to remain sharp — under the right circumstances. What are those circumstances? That answer comes from another study published in the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. The study found aerobic exercise may be the best way to boost brainpower and cognitive function. Aerobic exercise, also known as cardiovascular exercise, includes walking, hiking, jogging, running, biking, and swimming. Through these studies and others, we’re starting to get a better picture of how we can get the most out of our cognitive abilities and memory as we age. One group of researchers with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School even identified a molecule released into the bloodstream during

aerobic exercise that boosts cognition over time and may hinder neural degeneration. The Psychonomic Bulletin & Review study also noted that those who performed aerobic exercises had higher cognitive function than those who didn’t. Participants were able to

perform better when it came to task-switching, selective attention, and even working memory capacity. The study looked at a variety of age groups, from children to older adults, and people who were already considered healthy. In older people, the effect of aerobic exercise may even reduce symptoms related to many neurological disorders, from depression to dementia. The study also found that cognitive functions tied to implicit memory (functions that occur without conscious awareness, such as riding a bike, brushing your teeth, driving a car, or other familiar or repetitive tasks) were markedly better in older people who kept up a regimen of aerobic activity, though improvements were found in all age groups.

make a surprise donation in their name, or you can reach out and ask them directly. It’s the season of giving, after all!

The best way to make your thank-you feel authentic is to genuinely be authentic. Yes, an unexpected gesture can reflect well on your company and encourage clients to talk you up to their friends and family, but potential referrals should be a perk of giving back, not the main goal. Practice genuine gratitude this Thanksgiving, and it will be well-received.

THE FIRST SPOT IS THE BEST SPOT

We are all guilty of circling the parking lot at least once in search of the “perfect” parking spot. During the holiday season, parking can become a precious commodity. There are spots we consider more valuable than others — spots in which we desperately want to park our vehicles. For some people, the prime spots are nearest the store entrance; for others, the best spots give you optimal door- opening space. All of these “perfect” spots have one thing in common: They offer convenience — a convenience many drivers are willing to fight for. Let’s look at the parking spots near the entrance of the store. In an ideal world, these spots ensure you get in and out quickly. In reality, the spots closest to the store entrance are often the least convenient spots in the entire parking lot and are almost never worth the hassle or aggravation. Foot traffic dominates the area around a store entrance. During peak hours and peak shopping days after Thanksgiving, you may spend more time waiting for people to filter in and out of the store than it would take to park farther away and walk into the store. Areas near store entrances are routinely congested, and when drivers compete for those “best” spots, traffic jams are guaranteed. When it comes to scoping out the best spots, CarInsurance.com has identified two types of drivers. Upward of 38 percent of drivers are “vultures.” These drivers circle the parking lot at least twice before settling on a spot. Another 24 But is it worth it?

percent of drivers are “stalkers.” These drivers follow people carrying bags or pushing carts toward their own cars.

Stalkers can be particularly troublesome for the drivers who only care about getting in and out. They are notorious for pulling up near their target spot and waiting. This can cause traffic jams and hamper the parking process for others. According to the Southeastern Psychological Association, drivers defined as vultures or stalkers “spend significantly more time on the lot” compared to virtually all other drivers. If you value your time, parking in the first available spot you see will get you in and out faster than parking anywhere else.

SPICY, CREAMY SWEET POTATOES

SUDOKU

Sweet potatoes are a Thanksgiving staple, but they’re often the blandest thing on the table. Luckily that’s not the case with this recipe, which features Thai spices and coconut milk.

INGREDIENTS

• • •

5 pounds sweet potatoes 1 cup canned coconut milk

• • •

1/2 cup dark brown sugar 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon Thai red curry paste

1 tablespoon kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 375 F. On a large sheet pan, bake potatoes until very soft, approximately 75 minutes. 2. Let potatoes cool until they are safe to handle, then peel and mash. 3. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine coconut milk and curry paste. Once mixed, add the mixture, salt, half the sugar, and half the butter to potatoes. 4. 30 minutes before serving, heat oven to 425 F. Spread potatoes in a baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 20 minutes. 5. Uncover potatoes and dot with remaining butter and sugar. Broil until brown, crusty, and delicious. Serve hot.

The Best DIY Gifts

BESTDIYGIFT IDEAS FOR EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST

Looking for gift ideas that don’t break the bank but still show the special people in your life how much you care? Do-it-yourself (DIY) gifts are the way to go. Here are a few ideas to put together on a chilly night. Pull out your crafting supplies, turn on some holiday tunes, and get creative. Best DIYGift toMakeWith the LittleOnes: Handprint Apron Aunties, uncles, and godparents will love a gift that incorporates their favorite little ones, and it’s a great way to get the kids in on the project. Choose some unadorned aprons from your local craft or home goods store and some acrylic paint in a variety of colors. Then get crafty! The kids can use their handprints as a starting point and add other decorations as they like. You can also find some fun ideas on the blog Little Page Turner, like painting a butterfly from your kids’ stamped footprints. Have fun with it! Best DIYGift for Your Bestie: Personalized Mug You only need a mug and an oven-safe or porcelain marker to create this personalized gift. Use a mug you already own, or pick one up from the dollar store or thrift store, and get expressive! You could write a sweet or funny message (“but first, coffee” or “two shots, hold the chatter”) or list their favorite beverage (“coffee, no sugar” or “green tea”). Write something that

makes them think of you, or create a simple drawing. Enjoy the artistic freedom as much as they’ll enjoy your thoughtful gift. Best DIYGift for Someone Special: Memory Map Utilize a map, a pair of scissors, some glue, and your memories of meaningful places to create this sentimental gift. Choose map locations that are meaningful to you and your special person — where you met, where you celebrated special moments, where you first lived — and cut them out in geometric or heart shapes. Then, glue the cutouts to a piece of matboard. You can add kind words at each point, or let the places explain themselves. Place in a frame and gift to your loved one.
