Points and Problems 1. "Thy brother came with subtilty,. and hath taken away thy blessing" (Gen. 27:35). The title of this week’s lesson is “Things That Mar fam ily Life.” And the particular evil that appears in these six verses selected from Genesis is the sin of deceit. Certainly there is nothing that can more quickly and effectively destroy the unity and happiness of the fam ily than the practice of deceit be tween the members. There can be no better antidote for this ppison than for the young people starting a- new home to resolve solemnly that they will always be frank with each other . . . But in the Genesis story, al though deceit appears prominently in the verses chosen for this lesson we -shall not understand the back ground of this deceit without reading chapter 27 in its entirety. Rebekah, because Jacob was her favorite son, laid the whole deceitful plot and urged him to follow her plans. Thus favoritism on the part of the parents toward some particular c h i l d is another evil which often destroys the unity of the home. One has only to read the subsequent history in Gene sis to see that the harvest of this evil ran far into the future. 2. "Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornica tion" (Matt. 5:32). Here we have the greatest of all the destructive factors which work to mar family life, the sin of divorce. For this not only mars such life, but practically destroys it so far as the children are concerned. In divorce actions a great deal is said by both sides regarding the rights of the two parties to the action. But there is a third party involved in the action — the children of that home. And the rights of this third party are at least as important, if not more so, than the rights of either the husband or wife. It is a well-known fact, at tested by court statistics, that a tre mendous proportion of young crimi nals come from homes broken by di vorce. But in the word of our Lord, He points out an evil which is still worse than divorce, namely, the sin of marital unfaithfulness. In such cases, bad a!s divorce is, it is per mitted as the lesser of the two' evils. It is bad enough for a child to suffer the handicap of a broken home, but it would be still worse for the child to be reared in a home where either of the parents is involved in immoral LANTERN SLIDES p lain , 60c colored . relationships outside the home. This would be to poison the very springs of family life, and work irrevocable disaster in the minds of those brought up in such an atmosphere. Golden Text.; Illustration G alatians 6:2 The Christian who is in fellowship, with the Lord is not interested merely in living trimphantly himself, but is concerned also that his fellow believ ers shall progress victoriously also. The Jamaica Wesleyan Record illus trates this truth thus: “A story is told of a certain British regiment in India which was called upon to undergo ‘Kitchener’s Test,’ that is, to march a certain number of miles along a sandy track in a specified time without one man fa ll ing out. After covering a part of the distance, a young recruit marching by the side of „an ‘old-timer’ named Bill, said to him, ‘Bill, I can’t stick it.’ “The heat was terrific and the lad was well-nigh overcome. Bill, seeing it, said, ‘Here, give me, your rifle.’ After another two miles, Bill, notic ing again the lad’s distress, took over another part of his equipment; and before they had gone all the way, he was carrying the remainder of the lad’s kit. At the command ‘Halt!’ every man was in his place and the honor of the regiment was saved.” —Selected.
