The motive for the wit nessing is the Lord’s glory. The power by which to achieve it is found in the Person of the Holy Spirit without whom no testimony for the Lord or for the gospel can be effective. III. T o M a in t a in S p ir it u a l P ower (Acts 2:42) This passage tells how the power for witnessing is maintained: by con tinuance in the apostles’ teaching, that is, the Word of God. Such con tinuance w ill lead to fellowship with other believers in Christ. There will be, as a result, worship rising as a sweet odor before God.. IV. T o M a in t a in . to- be occupied With the Word and prayer, while the appointed deacons were to have charge of the temporal affairs of the church, a service as sacred and holy as any other. Partic ular attention should be given to the character of the men chosen to “ serve tables.’’ They were required to be chosen from among the believers, for no unsaved person should be appoint ed. They were to be of good report; a good reputation was essential. They were to be filled with the Holy Spirit, who aloné can empower men to serve God acceptably. And1 they were to be filled with wisdom resulting from yieldedness to the Holy Spirit. They could not be self-appointed, but must be installed by the leaders. V. T o T h in k of O thers ( A cts 11:27-30) Here the mission of the church is to recognize the oneness Of all be lievers. This ministry requires the re ceiving of information concerning conditions elsewhere among believers —in this case, the needs of the church at Antioch. It w ill call for the ac cepting of the' responsibility which such information imposes. It w ill lead also to the taking of action in order to meet that responsibility by re sponding to the call for help. This attitude and practice is something more than aroused sympathy for some special need; it is the recognizing of the oneness of all true believers (cf. 1 Por. 12:25, 26). VI. T o R ecognize th e H o ly S p ir it ' s L eadership (Acts 13:1-3) In this passage the church is shown as needing to be in such spiritual condition that it can discern and re spond to the voice of the Holy Spirit. This condition comes by being taught in the Word by God-appointed teach ers, by ministering to the Lord rather ■than to the multitude, ánd by fasting. .This relationship w ill issue in obe dience to the Holy Spirit and the send ing forth of whomever He mdy choose, even though, in the eyes of the people, they can least bé spared.
