Labour strife on the school front As the year ended, teachers continued to protest the Ontario government’s austerity measures. “It’s not about the money,” insisted Pleasant Corners Public School teacher and Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario representative Lisa Jennings who joined about 40 colleagues last week in front of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell M.P.P. Grant Crack’s Hawkesbury office to protest Bill 115. While teachers are willing to accept a pay freeze, they are not ready to sacrifice their democratic rights, which are quashed in the legislation, says Jennings. The demonstration was part of a one-day strike that affected Upper Canada District School Board schools, which remained open Thursday.

Cooperate or stagnate, councils agree Hawkesbury Mayr René Berthiuame and Champlain Mayor Gary Barton agreed at a meeting in October that the municipalities had to work together if the region is to prosper. They also concurred that it is time to back up words with actions and to draw up a new inter-municipal sharing deal as soon as possible. Hawkesbury was to present a detailed proposal to Champlain by the end of the year so an agreement can be signed in early 2013. The council members concurred that the neighbouringmunicipalities ought to cooperate in order to capitalize on another expected“wave” of interest in the area.
