VISION 2028 | Transformative Artists’ Journeys that Transformed Interlochen Itself
Dear Interlochen family and friends,
In April 1926, 230 of the best young musicians from across the country gathered under the proscenium of Detroit’s Orchestra Hall for a concert that would defy all expectations. “Never in my professional career have I had such chills go up and down my back,” reported Ossip Gabrilowitsch, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, after hearing this massive youth orchestra. The concert’s organizer, Dr. Joseph E. Maddy, soon wrote that “all who heard” it “will agree... such an organization should become an annual event”—specifically, he proposed, a summer camp for the fostering of young artists. In the summer of 1928, through philanthropic support, gumption, sweat, and luck, Maddy held his camp in the woods of northern Michigan. The rest is history. Interlochen Center for the Arts has been on an incredible journey ever since that riveting Detroit concert in 1926. As the site of life-changing transformation for thousands of young creatives, Interlochen has itself been transformed by the many artists’ journeys that have taken place under its stately pines. Philanthropic support has been vital to that transformation, an essential companion in every step of Interlochen’s journey from 1926 to today. Thanks to you, this has been an extraordinary year for artists and art-lovers alike. Explore this Annual Report of Gifts to see how Interlochen kicked off celebrations for its 2028 centennial while also reflecting on our nation’s 250th birthday; how young creatives embarked on new artistic journeys at the 99th iteration of the camp Dr. Maddy envisioned a century ago; how philanthropy is building Interlochen’s future, whether on the stage or in the studio; and much more. Even though Interlochen’s second century officially begins in 2028, the immense potential that new century holds is already being realized and expanded with every passing day.
“As the site of life-changing transformation for thousands of young creatives, Interlochen has itself been transformed by the many artists’ journeys that have taken place under its stately pines.”
