ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS

ACADEMIC It was no trivial accomplishment this fall when the Academy’s own “Thinking Blueberries” quiz bowl team won the WCMU Quiz Central Grand Championship. A few months later, thanks to philanthropic support, nine students and several teachers took their spring break in Costa Rica for immersive study at the Tirimbina Biological Reserve (pictured). Academy students had up-close and hands-on experiences exploring the flora and fauna of the rainforest, practiced their Spanish, and were exposed to the art, culture, and history of the local community.

CREATIVE WRITING In April, writer Parul Kapur (pictured), who won Interlochen’s second annual Pattis Family Foundation Creative Arts Book Award for her debut novel Inside the Mirror , held a multi-day residency at the Academy in which she inspired students with insights into her writer’s craft and her journeys as an artist. Her master classes at Interlochen emphasized community, courage, and taking creative risks as students find their identities and hone their artistic voice. FILM & NEW MEDIA In April, a cohort of film students and teachers traveled to the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, for the world premiere of the feature-length documentary they created. Grounded , a project of the Interlochen Cinema Collective and a student-led “meta-documentary” about teenagers discovering regenerative farming, is the culmination of nearly four years of planning and intense collaboration between nearly 170 students, faculty, and guest artists spanning all of Interlochen’s artistic disciplines, as well as generous support from the Greenacres Foundation.

DANCE Over Valentine’s Day weekend, dozens of Academy dance students and five theatre students vividly brought to life the timeless story Romeo & Juliet through the full-length Sergei Prokofiev ballet the Shakespeare tragedy inspired, with choreography by dance director Joseph Morrissey. After four performances in Corson Auditorium, they took the show (and its elaborate costumes) on the road to nearby Bay Harbor, MI.
