Annual Report FLIP BOOK 8.5x10.5 2026

MUSIC Throughout three days of recording in January, the final orchestral score for the Grounded documentary came to life, with Academy music students taking part in all stages of the process, from composition to performance to engineering. Jeanine Cowen (IAC Fac 19-21, 23-24, 26), screen scoring chair at the University of Southern California, led the scoring session, while Tyler Clark (pictured; IAC/ NMC 89-90, IAA 90-92, 93-94, IAC St 91, 94-95) conducted.

INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTS At a semester’s-end showcase in December in the Phoenix Theatre, interdisciplinary arts students presented their original art installation ‌ George Orwell’s Company Toy Store’s Black Friday Sale (pictured), developed during the class “Concept to Completion” with guidance from instructor Steven Speciale (IAA Fac 22-26) and visiting guest artist Cory McAbee. Another visiting instructor, Ren Casey (IAC 97, 99, IAA 98-00), inspired students to imagine, plan, and pitch ideas for businesses and career opportunities at the intersection of entrepreneurship and the arts.

THEATRE The 2025–26 season showcased the versatility of Academy performers, with shows ranging from children’s-book adaptations, including Grumpy Monkey and Alice by Heart (based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ), to Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost and August Strindberg’s Ghost Sonata , which offered actors an introduction to the minimalist, stylized customs of traditional Japanese Noh theatre. Musical theatre was resonant, from 9 to 5 (pictured) to The Who’s Tommy , for which Broadway veterans Kelly and Adam Jacobs visited to guide students in rehearsal.

VISUAL ARTS In the autumn, led by new division head Patty Smith, students made repeat visits to Better Together, a local nonprofit supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to create art collaboratively with the community, fostering new connection and creativity. With two faculty members, 11 students also took a four-day trip to New York City (pictured), where they immersed themselves in its inspiring museums and galleries. In the spring, student work was displayed in nearby Traverse City’s Dennos Museum.
