All of us can m ake a difference for the nearl y 6 m illion Canadians affected b y m ental ill- nesses. Here are so m e of the co mm on my ths -and truths. People with m ental illness are poor and/or less intelligent. Man y studies show that m ost m entall y ill people have average or above-average intelligence. Mental illness, like ph y sical illness, can affect an y one regardless of intelligence, social class or inco m e level. Mental illness is caused b y a personal weakness. A m en- tal illness is not a character flaw. It is an illness, and it has nothing to do with be- ing weak or lacking will-power. Although people with m ental illness can pla y a big part in their own recover y , the y did not choose to beco m e ill, and the y are not laz y because the y cannot just “snap out of it.” Mental illness is a single, rare disorder. Mental illness is not a single disease but a broad classification for m an y disorders. Anxiet y , depression, schizophrenia, per- sonalit y disorders, eating disorders and organic brain disorders can cause m iser y , tears and m issed opportunities for thou- sands of Canadians. Mental illness knows no boundaries; it can affect all people, regardless of age, culture, inco m e and education.

HAWKESBURY | The future of 125 Tulmar Safety Systems Inc. jobs will be more se- cure when the Hawkesbury company completes the installation of new equip- ment that will perform work that is now carried out in the United States. Tul m ar, which m akes life-saving equip- m ent, is investing $200,000 in a radio fre- quenc y welding m achine with the help of a contribution of $85,500 fro m the federal govern m ent.“This new technolog y will help us m aintain jobs.
