Interpreting Your Answers
If you scored mostly A’s: You need a CAREER COACH. • Focus: Clarity, Mindset, and Behaviour.
• Next Steps: You need a neutral thinking partner to help you unlock your own potential. As suggested in Chapter 1 of the book, focus on your “Starting Materials” (confidence, ambition, and direction). If you scored mostly B’s or C’s: You need a MENTOR. • Focus: Advice and Knowledge. • What they do: ◦ (Mostly B) General Mentor: Someone to share wisdom and help you build your “Knowledge and Experience Pillar.” ◦ (Mostly C) Insider Mentor: Someone to help you navigate specific organizational dynamics. • Evolution Note: Can a mentor become a sponsor? Yes. As the book notes, “Occasionally, a mentor may even become a sponsor as your relationship and/or your careers evolve.” However, be careful, mentors often see your vulnerabilities, while sponsors need to see you as a star ready for the next level.
If you scored mostly D’s: You need to cultivate a SPONSOR. • Focus: Power and Influence.
• The "Mic Drop" Moment: As noted in the book, “The most important relationship in sponsorship is between a sponsor and the audience, not between the sponsor and the individual they are sponsoring.” • Reality Check: Unlike mentorship, sponsorship is usually “earned rather than requested.” To get a sponsor, you must demonstrate excellence and build visibility so they trust that your success will reflect positively on them.
