The Great Fire anniversary COMMUNAUTÉ • COMMUN I TY
Le 24 avril dernier, huit Dynamos de l’École secondaire catholique de Casselman ont pris part aux Olympiades de résolution de problèmes scientifiques du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien. Après avoir exécuté avec brio trois défis, l’équipe sénior composée de Jonathan Leroux, Élie Boulerice, Patrick Poirier et Gerson Zamor (photo) a remporté la première place. Pour sa part, l’équipe junior qui comprenait Mathieu Leblanc, Yanic Mainville, Luc Dauphinais et Sandrella Lapalme est arrivée ex aequo avec Le Relais en deuxième position. Les élèves du Pavillon de Casselman, pour leur part, ont participé à une compétition en robotique et un tournoi d’échecs. Julien Dugal a gagné la première place au niveau des joueurs intermédiaires.

A century ago this June, the Village of Russell’s existence was in jeopardy as a fire raged, destroying 25 buildings in the village core. It was the birth of the Russell Fire Brigade, a group of volunteers who, with the aid of a Silsby Pumper unit loaned fromOttawa and rushed to the scene on the New York Central Railway line, had the fire under control within a few hours. June 6 is the anniversary of the Great Russell Fire and the Russell Fire Department, themodern descendent of the original village fire brigade, will mark the anniversary with the return of “the Little Silsby Pumper that saved Russell” as a team of horses pulls the unit through the village as part of an anniversary parade, starting 11 a.m. from the village arena and following Concession Street to the Russell Fire Station. On site will be displays of historical fire-fighting equipment and their modern-day equivalents.
