Civil Engineering and specialist piling contractors, DAWSON- WAM Ltd, were awarded the Environmental Sustainability Award, sponsored by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, for an entry that the judges said displayed how staff at all levels and in all departments of the business are involved in environmental improvements on site, with top level commitment from the Managing Director being a key driver in this. The company has developed an innovative and well- planned approach to sustainability which is backed up with a benchmarking process that includes Carbon Calculators and Capture Mapping to track performance, as well as continued investment towards achieving a Net Zero Carbon target. DAWSON-WAM has demonstrated its committed to strong community engagement by promoting environmentally conscious careers for young people in many schools and has also shown a grass-roots approach to sustainability by involving staff in a project to create an outdoor garden and communal area at the company’s headquarters using upcycled materials that would otherwise have gone to waste. The judging panel commended DAWSON-WAM for their advanced plans to become carbon neutral and for their enhancement of the local environment by planting 25,000 trees on a 40-acre site near the company head office, concluding that their use of renewable energy alongside strong energy efficiency measures and investment in modern plant showed a strong commitment to sustainability. Environmental Sustainability Award WINNER: DAWSON-WAMLTD Peter Kerr (HSEQ Director).
Social ValueAward
The winner of the Social Value Award, sponsored by NIE Electricity Networks, was Combined Facilities Management (CFM) for their NIHE Maintenance & Improvement Contract which involved delivering 2,000+ work orders per week to 28,000 NIHE properties. CFM utilised this large-scale social housing maintenance contract to deliver real and measurable social value across NI through a series of initiatives that delivered economic, social and environmental action. These included a focus on the employment of long-term unemployed, employing 100% of their team from local skilled labour, offering Upskilling/DIY Skills training for residents, providing 500+ hours of vital First Aid and Defib training to residents, partnering with foodbanks to address local food poverty and using its Furniture Upcycling Scheme to rehome 1,875 items of unwanted furniture that equated to 40+ tonnes diverted from landfill. The Judges noted that CFM’s approach of People, Places and Planet showed their complex understanding of the impacts that social value can make when embedded into the delivery of a contract and said that their localised approach to social value reduces barriers for young people and others when moving into employment to access job roles and training opportunities. Overall, the judges said this project has created lasting impacts on individuals, communities and the environment which is the cornerstone of social value.
