DEANE PUBLIC WORKS ACHIEVES UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION ISO 44001… Buildingbetter business through CollaborativeWorking

F ermanagh-based civil engineering specialists Deane Public Works (DPW) has successfully achieved International Certification ISO 44001:2017 for Collaborative Business Relationship Management (CBRM) in conjunction with Quadra Consulting. We talked to representatives from DPW, Quadra Consulting and System Certification Services Ltd (SCS), the ISO audit processor to discover what goes into successfully achieving ISO certification.

Deane Public Works NIB: Why was it important for DPW to achieve the ISO 44001:2017? Donna Teague, Compliance Manager, DPW: As a progressive company, developing long-term collaborative business relationships with our clients and supply chain to enhance performance delivery has been an essential part of our growth strategy. Working in partnership within the construction industry has been in practice for many years. However, ISO 44001 is the evolution of this process and represents a new generation of international standards with a focus on behaviours, organisational culture and management processes providing a common platform to underpin sustainable business relationships and harness the benefits of collaborative working. The award of ISO 44001 International Certification is a fantastic achievement and a ringing endorsement of how we as a company are conducting our operations to the highest standards, founded on close collaboration through aligned values and culture with our clients, partners and supply chain.

NIB: What key benefits has DPW achieved by developing a CBRM system with Quadra Consulting? DT: Quadra Consulting assisted our company through expert consultancy and encouraging our Senior Management Team to think outside the box in the development of our CBRM system. This process required in-depth analysis of the business processes, the development of process maps, an examination of relationships involved and the evaluation of the most effective means of documenting the system, as well as training and awareness sessions to guide the key personnel through the many processes along the journey from development to certification. The benefits of working with a local consultant and certification body who worked together to fully understand our specific needs and requirements from the outset and throughout the process was an essential component in the successful attainment of ISO 44001, and we would recommend their services highly.

NIB: Can you provide an overview of how the new systemworks in practice? DT: As a multi-disciplined engineering business, DPW has been implementing this unique certification and management system with our long-standing client NI Water across all construction projects on IF105 Integrated Partnerships Framework to support delivery of their strategic £1.68bn Water and Sewage PC21 Capital Investment Programme. The ISO 44001 standard has provided a framework for the establishment, implementation, maintenance and improvement of collaborative processes with NI Water and development of a joint Relationship Management Plan to consistently achieve desired outcomes across IF105 Framework projects, through the staged lifecycle process. Through collaboratively working and the adoption of an Early Control Involvement (ECI) Protocol we engage with NI Water at an early stage to facilitate integration of the design and the construction process. This process gives our experienced
