In addition to manual hobbies, there are many others that have a positive impact. For example, some individuals prefer to learn foreign languages. This hobby is beneficial. 90% of studies show that learning a language helps academic performance. Concentration is also improved. Just one week of learning a language has a good impact on student’s concentration levels. The study that came to this conclusion compared people from the age of 18 to the age of 78 and regardless of age, the results were conclusive. Memory is improved, with people who know a second language performing better. In addition to these elements, communication and creativity are also improved. Another hobby that many people enjoy is writing. Walter Ong (1982) observed that writing is fundamental to accessing one’s full human potential. James Pennebaker, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Texas-Austin, has noted that there are also emotional benefits to writing. Another study by Smyth, Stone, Hurewitz, and Kaell (1999) encouraged asthmatic and arthritic patients to write about stressful events in their daily lives. After four months, the asthmatic patients improved their lung capacity, while the control group showed no change. As for the arthritic patients, they improved in general terms, while the control group did not change either. The improvements went beyond those attributed to purely medical causes. In conclusion, regardless of whether we are talking about hobbies that focus on physical health or those that incorporate cognitive aspects, they are beneficial, giving the individual a refuge that over time has a positive impact on their life.
