PLANT INSTALLATION Code-It Installs Mark Andy Performance Series Press Warrington, UK-based independent converter Code-It Labels has installed a 20-inch Mark Andy Performance Series P7 flexo press to boost produc- tivity and allow expansion into the flexible packag- ing sector at its plant in the northwest of England. “We have a policy of continual investment in tech- nology that allows us to meet our customers’ expec- tations of quality, reliability, and price,” said Code-It owner and Managing Director Phil Barker.

DuPont Cyrel FAST Achieves GreenCircle Certifi ation The Cyrel FAST thermal platemaking workflow from Du- pont Cyrel Flexographic Solutions has achieved Certified Energy Savings recognition from GreenCircle. GreenCircle Certified, the internationally recognized third-party certification entity that independently verifies the validity of sustainability claims, confirmed that the Cyrel FAST workflow delivers verified reductions in energy consumption compared to traditional solvent-based plate- making systems. “Cyrel FAST has redefined what sustainable responsi- ble platemaking looks like through its completely solvent- free process,” said Tucker Norton, Vice President & General Manager of Printing & Films. “Not only does the system simplify operations, but by eliminating the need to handle, distill, and dispose of washout solvents, it also sig- nificantly reduces environmental burden while providing a cleaner, safer working environment.”

This has translated into a variety of Mark Andy flexo presses over the past 20 years, ranging from a 10-inch 2200 model, through two 13-inch Perfor- mance Series to the latest 20-inch Performance Se- ries P7. Moving Into Label Established originally in 2000, the company moved into label production in 2002. As web widths widened, so too did Code-It’s color capability, from six to eight, all fully UV cured. The latest Performance P7 press is an eight-color servo-driven flexo line, fitted with delam/relam, turn bars, laminating and a dual rewind. Elsewhere in the factory, Code-It has digital ink- jet capability for its short run work, but according to Barker there is always a clear divide between his company’s flexo and digital work. “With the ease and speed of makeready on a modern flexo press we can handle all but the short- est of runs economically,' he said. "The auto-register on the new Performance Series P7 is a great exam- ple of how Mark Andy has developed and refined its technology over the years to make life easier for the operator.” Antony Cotton and Phil Barker with Code-It’s new 20- inch Mark Andy P7E flexo press.

Energy savings are calculated by comparing the power consumption of a Cyrel FAST Thermal Platemaking work- flow, and the power consumption of a Solvent Platemak- ing Workflow, based on 96-hour testing cycle. According to the analysis, the Cyrel FAST workflow meets all the nec- essary qualifications to be certified with 20 percent less energy consumption than traditional solvent-based pro- cesses. DuPont’s published life cycle assessments show that Cyrel enhanced flexographic printing delivers environ- mental benefits over gravure, further reducing the carbon footprint of packaging. The same report also includes a comparison between Cyrel FAST and traditional solvent processing. The thermal system simultaneously delivers exceptional efficiency gains, including up to 75 percent faster platemaking, streamlined workflow steps, and con- sistent high-quality plate output, all achieved while dra- matically reducing the process’s environmental footprint. Notably, Cyrel FAST reduces volatile organic com- pound (VOC) emissions by up to 99.8 percent compared to conventional solvent workflows and lowers global warm- ing potential by 48 percent, offering a proven pathway for converters seeking to reduce their Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
