23.10 2. Have the students think of a story from their history, such as when they were a baby or toddler. Invite the students to turn to a partner and share their story. After the students share, have the following discussion:

a. How did you know that story? b. Did someone tell you that story? c. Did you see a picture of that event?

3. Explain to the students that they were able to tell that story about their past because someone told them about it or they saw a picture. This is one way we learn about history. 4. Next, have the students think of a story that happened to them recently, such as in the last week or month. Invite the students to turn to a partner and share this story. After the students share, have the following discussion: a. How did you know that story? b. Were you there when it happened? 5. Explain that they were able to tell that story because they were there when the event happened. They were part of the event. This is another way we learn about history. 6. Read the “Primary Sources” article. Have a discussion about primary sources. Explain that primary sources are created by people who were at an event. They experienced an event in history. 7. Have a discussion about how we know things about the past. Ask: a. Could somebody who lived 100 years ago tell you today about something you saw? (Answers may vary.) b. How do we know what happened long ago if the people aren’t alive? (Answers may vary.) c. What makes you think that? (Answers may vary.) 8. Explain that we can use primary sources to learn about history. People who lived in the past have created primary sources that we can learn from. 9. Read the article “Types of Primary Sources” as the students follow along. As you read, have the students highlight the types of primary sources. Make a list on the board. (pictures, videos, letters, objects) 10.Go through each type of source and show the example of the source that you prepared. Explain each source and why it is a primary source. a. Pictures: Pictures are primary sources because they are taken by people at an event. b. Videos: Video recordings can be primary sources because they are created as an event is occurring. c. Letters: Letters can be primary sources because they are written by people who experienced an event. d. Objects: Objects can be primary sources when they are created at the time of an event or when they are from an event. 11.Point out the images on the cover of the student edition. Explain that these pictures are primary sources. They were taken by people at the event. We can learn about history from these images. Have a discussion about what you can learn about history from these primary sources. Ask the following questions. (Answers will vary depending on the image.) a. What event does this primary source show? b. What do you see in the picture? c. What can we learn from this picture? 12.Explain to the students that they will be creating their own primary source. a.
