Article 6: Learning About History Word Count: 23 Vocabulary: N/A High Impact Teaching Strategies: Multiple Exposures, Explicit Teaching Lesson Plan: 1. Review what was learned in previous lessons this week about history and primary sources. a. Explain: History is what happened in the past. We can use sources to learn about history. We can use primary sources to learn about the past. Primary sources are created by people at the event. Pictures, videos, letters, and objects can be primary sources. 2. Read the article to the students as they follow along. a. Recap what has been learned this week. Explain that we can be historians and learn about history. There are many ways that we can learn about history. We can ask questions. We can use primary sources to learn about the past. We can use other sources like books. We can learn from stories from the past. 3. Explain to the students that they are going to practice what they have learned this week. They will be historians and learn about people and an event in history. 4. Show the Poster Pal activity “Let’s Be Historians!” Review the questions that one can ask to learn more about history. This activity will need to be scaffolded to aid in student understanding. You will be reading the Biography of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Choose parts of the biography that the students will best understand and that answer the questions “Who?” “What?” “Where?” “When?” and “How?” a. Show the graphic organizer Biography of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Explain that this is a source that we can use to learn more about people and an event in history. b. Explain why a biography is a source that can be used to learn about the past. c. Discuss the primary source images included with the biography. d. Ask the questions “Who?” “What?” “Where?” “When?” and “How?” and find the answers in the biography. Have the students share what they learned about the historical event from the source. As a class, draw or write the answers to the questions on the Poster Pal. e. Explain that they are being historians because they are learning about an event in history. 5. Recap the week. Have a discussion about the importance of learning about history and how we can use sources and ask questions to help us learn about history.
