Ask students these questions: a. Have you seen images taken from space before? b. What do they look like? c. Have you seen someone using GPS to get directions? d. Have you seen the weather presenter on TV before? i. How do they know where storms are headed? 2. Read the article and have students circle “satellite” and “radar.” Have them underline the sentences containing the functions of the images. 3. Read the title of the article out loud and, as a class, discuss the word “technology.” 4. Explain to students that technology is how science is used to solve problems. Tell them that satellites, radar, and GPS on phones and cars are technologies that make it easier to use geography to solve problems. 5. Have students get into small groups and discuss and list ways in which better maps and weather forecasts could be important. 6. Have each group present their list. Compress the lists into one list on the board and have students copy the list into their interactive notebooks.
