Review what was learned in the previous lesson about timelines. Have the students discuss the timelines they made in the student edition. Ask: a. What do the timelines show? 2. Have students work in pairs and discuss the following questions. Discuss as a class. As you discuss, assess student understanding of the concepts and give feedback. a. What is a timeline? b. What does your timeline show? 3. Have the students locate the title of the article and read it with their partner. 4. Have the students share their family pictures. Give each student an opportunity to share about their families, even if they didn’t bring a picture. a. Who is in your family? (Answers may vary.) b. Do you have other family members who aren’t in the picture? (Answers may vary.) 5. Read the article as the students follow along. Discuss the article. a. Have a discussion about how families change over time. You might have a new baby in your family, or you might get a new pet. New people might join your family. b. You have many people in your family. As you grow and change, your family does too. 6. Give the students time to share how their families have changed over time. Have them use the following sentence stems in their responses. a. How has your family changed over time? (Answers may vary.) i. In the past, my family __________. Now, my family __________. b. How do you think your family will change in the future? What makes you say that? (Answers may vary.) i. In the future, my family might change by __________. 7. Explain that today, the students are going to make a timeline of how their family has changed over time. The students will use the primary source images of their family that they brought to make a timeline of their family. a. Model for the students how this will look, using images or pictures of your own family. i. Paste the images onto the large piece of paper. Draw arrows from each picture to the next to make a timeline. ii. Under each picture, write how your family changed each time. 8. Give each student a large piece of paper. Have them create a timeline, using their pictures or images. If students did not bring pictures, they can draw on their timeline to show how their family has changed over time.
