Have a discussion about how neighborhoods and communities where we live change over time. When people move to a new place, the neighborhood changes. When people build new houses, the neighborhood changes. When new families move into the neighborhood, it changes. This change happens slowly over time. b. When people move into a town, the community gets bigger. People use the land for different things. i. If possible, give specific examples of how your neighborhood and community have changed over time. For example: new buildings that have been built, new houses that have been built, new buildings that are being built, etc. 5. Reread the article. Have the students raise their hands when they hear how communities and neighborhoods change over time. Write each change on the board. (new houses and roads, people move in and out, land is used for different things) a. Discuss each of these changes in depth. 6. Show the images “Building a House,” “Neighborhood,” and “A Family Moving,” included in related media. Discuss the images. Discuss if the students have seen any of this happening in their neighborhood or community. a. Have you seen this happening in your neighborhood? (Answers may vary.) b. What did you see? (Answers may vary.) c. What changes do you think might happen in the future? (Answers may vary.) d. Why do you think that? (Answers may vary.) 7. Divide the class into groups. Give each group a large white piece of paper (big enough that the whole group can all draw and contribute to the activity). a. Assign each group to draw a picture that represents a change that takes place in neighborhoods and communities over time. i. For example: empty fields, house by itself, houses in a bigger community, bigger buildings being built, new people moving in, etc. b. Have the groups draw their assigned change. c. Put the papers in order to create a mural that shows change over time. 8. Wrap up the lesson by discussing how people and places change over time. Recap the week by discussing how we can show changes over time by using timelines. Article Assessment Question: 1. How do neighborhoods change over time? a. You mow the lawn.
