Fitness trail spraying upsets residents

September 6-9

they were later told by a professional that they needed a license to purchase proper signs. The MOE will provide them with fur- ther information. Runners along the trail were not pleased. “Poison ivy is everywhere,” says Hughson. “They shouldn’t spray it. Just avoid it.” Sandra MacEachern agrees. “Roundup is government approved, but it can have toxic effects, and it should not be used in a place people are encouraged to use for fitness and health!” Roundup is widely-used in North America to kill broadleaf plants. Studies have shown toxic effects on amphibians. Trail users recalled last year when Hydro One cut down all the trees along their right of way and applied Garlon on remaining vegetation. Says Hughson, “I ran that very day. There were no signs, and they didn’t close the path.” Hydro One said they had erected signage, but several residents near the trail state they did not.

Russell village residents are again upset over herbicide application, after Russell Township staff sprayed Roundup on poison ivy along the fitness trail. Several users of the fitness trail contact- ed our newspaper to report the posting of signs announcing spraying for poison ivy. The township was informed by the Ministry of Environment that the prod- uct can be applied without a license, but
