during the late 1700s and early 1800s? ● It had not been many years since America won the Revolutionary War. The men in the government had fought in the war, written the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and created a new government. Now, the press (newspapers and individuals) was severely criticizing the new government, the president, and the actions of Congress. The men who had written, supported, and ratified the First Amendment passed a law called the Alien and Sedition Acts that made it illegal to “print, utter, or publish ... any false, scandalous, and malicious [hostile] writing” about the federal government. ○ What are your thoughts on this action? ○ Would you have supported the act or supported a free press? Let’s Draw or Write: ● Imagine that Lewis and Clark and the members of the Corps of Discovery have just arrived at the Pacific Coast after 18 months of travel. Would they have thought of Thomas Paine’s quote, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph”? What might they say in a letter to President Jefferson about arriving at the ocean and the trip? Write a letter from the Corps of Discovery to President Jefferson. Share some of the sights, experiences, and thoughts they may have had. ● Conduct additional research on one of the individuals highlighted in this week’s publication.
