The third theme was the future of streaming and the need to bring more young people into the industry. Speakers said streaming has already changed viewing habits, and the next challenge is improving delivery, latency, reliability and user experience. But they warned that the industry needs to explain itself better to young people. Netflix, gaming and streaming services appear instantly on screens, but few understand the engineering, operations and media technology behind them. There were calls for more outreach into schools and universities, better explanations of career pathways, and more support for neurodiverse young people.
The second major topic was education and training. Delegates debated whether computers should be reduced in classrooms, with the conclusion that the issue is not technology itself, but how young people are taught to use it. There was concern that instant answers can reduce effort, research skills and deeper learning. Speakers argued that education should focus more on process: how students reach an answer, not just whether the answer is correct. The same applies in the workplace, where AI can produce reports, CVs or spreadsheets quickly, but users must still understand, check and take responsibility for the result.
The closing session returned to three main themes from the day: AI, education and skills, and the future of streaming. The first discussion focused on AI and how it should be understood. Speakers stressed that AI is not “thinking” in a human sense, but producing likely answers based on data and models. The concern was not simply that AI might be wrong, but that users may accept its output without challenge. Ian Nock summed it up by saying: “We’re never more than a few seconds away from having an answer – not the answer.” The room agreed that AI can be highly useful, but only when combined with verification, expertise and critical thinking.
