Physical Therapy Lagniappe What We’re Grateful For

The month of November brings us Thanksgiving, which reminds us to be grateful for everything we have. We are honored as a work family to be able to provide our services and professional expertise to those who need us. We’re also thankful for the special people we get to interact with every day. Individually, our staff is thankful for what this life has provided each of us. So, this month, we’re featuring what our staff members are personally grateful for! ABBY I am thankful for my family and friends. They are always there to pick me up when I’m down and help me have a good time. I am also thankful to be able to practice physical therapy and help patients every day. JUEWELL “Although there’s so much to be grateful for, I’m very grateful for the Lord’s grace and mercy. He provides me with everything on earth, and I am grateful for it. It’s just one of His many blessings.” CAROL “I am forever thankful for my family — my husband, who is a true partner in my life, and my two beautiful, smart, precious daughters. I am also thankful for my 86-year-old mother, who still tells me what to do, and my two sisters, who are also my friends.”

JESSICA “I am thankful for God-given grace and mercy every day, a warm home with three great kids, and a wonderful husband, plus a loving church community and a job that serves a purpose each day. Every day is truly a gift!” CRYSTAL “I am thankful for the hard times. During those hard times, I feel closer to God. Challenges teach me strength, grace, and wisdom.” RYAN “I am most thankful for God’s abundant grace. It is because of Him that I have become the person I am today. I am so thankful for His blessings of a loving husband and six healthy, happy kids. What amazing grace He has bestowed on our lives.” LONA “I am thankful for my health, my family, and especially my four beautiful grandkids. Also, I am thankful that I have a great job with amazing coworkers who are like family.”

LISA “I am thankful for God’s blessings in the form of family, church, friends, and coworkers, and for welcoming a daughter-in-law to our family in 2019.” JAYME “I am thankful for all the blessings God has given me: my family, children, home, and food. So many people have to worry about where they will sleep at night or where they will get food, and I am blessed to say I have a roof over my head and a job to provide my family a way to eat. I am thankful for a supportive husband and two sweet children to watch grow.” From all of us at ELITE PT, we wish you a happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the time with your family, and a have a great holiday.

avoid injury, target the correct muscle groups, and work more efficiently.

Use Active Recovery Days to Boost Your Results More Isn’t Always More

SO … WHAT SHOULD I DO ALL DAY? You won’t be going full-bore at the gym, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep your body moving. If you’re a CrossFitter, take a yoga class to maintain flexibility. Weightlifters can swap out the heavy weights for bodyweight moves and light cardio. If you’re a runner, reduce your distance and speed by jogging a shorter route at a lower target heart rate. Whatever your typical activity, shoot for about 50 percent effort or less on these days. Active recovery days are also the perfect opportunity to prep food! Spend the afternoon cooking chicken breasts, boiling rice, soaking oats, and chopping veggies, then divide them into enough single-serving containers to last the rest of the week. Most importantly, take advantage of this time to catch up with the important people in your life and the hobbies you love. You can even kill two birds with one stone by playing basketball with friends or going for a walk with the kids. When done properly, active recovery days can recharge your body, your mind, and your life.

WHY SHOULD I BOTHER WITH ACTIVE RECOVERY?

Taking a day off from your workout routine might feel like slacking, but scheduling recovery days into your regimen will actually make the time you spend in the gym more effective. Active recovery days aren’t really days off; you just do less physical work and focus more on the other tasks necessary for reaching your goals. With the holiday craziness kicking into full swing, now is the perfect opportunity to make sure you’re scheduling those active recovery days. You’ll have more time to focus on everything else you love and give your body what it needs to work off those extra Thanksgiving treats!

Heavy exercise “damages” your muscles, and they use this downtime to repair that damage, which causes the cells to enlarge and ultimately results in muscle growth and increased strength. This hypertrophy process can’t happen — at least, not very successfully — unless your muscles have a chance to rest and recover. Reducing your workout intensity also allows you to focus on proper form, whether that’s for lifting, running, CrossFit, or other athletic pursuits. Perfecting your form will help you

It’s Our Turn to Give a Testimonial Colleen and Mike, This Is for You!

but we also wanted to single out a very special patient and her husband to thank them for everything they do for us.

Colleen and Mike Coutee are hardworking, friendly folks. We have seen each of them on several occasions for various orthopedic issues over the last 10 years or so. Most recently, we saw Colleen for the rehabilitation of her right shoulder after a rotator cuff repair. She did great.

A few years ago, when one of them was coming to us for PT, Colleen brought us a cake. Well, since then, she never stopped!

For the last few years and counting, nearly every other Wednesday, Colleen brings us a treat to share with everybody in our office. It’s usually some sort of cake or cookies. And, almost without fail, it’s gone by the end of the day. Everybody in the office looks forward to what she might bring and saves room that day for a sweet treat. I hate to say it, but it’s almost expected at this point! We are so blessed to have such caring people who would think about us every other week like that and take the time to do something special for us. In honor of Colleen, we have included her Louisiana Butter Cake recipe as this month’s recipe.

Every month in our newsletter, we share a client’s perspective about their experience in physical therapy and how they improved with ELITE PT. Clients usually explain what they are able to do now and how we were able to help them. We have shared a client’s words again this month on Page 2,

Thank you, Colleen and Mike!

• What to Know Before Black Friday Shopping

Skip the Sales and Have Some Pie 3 Reasons Black Friday Isn’t Worth Your Time

The day of chaos will soon be upon us. In a few weeks, Americans will leave their homes with bellies full of turkey to descend upon retail stores in the feeding frenzy that is Black Friday. Sure, it’s a bit stressful, but with all the great sales and gift-giving holidays on the horizon, Black Friday is the best day to knock out that shopping list, right? Not really. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t bother with Black Friday. YOU WANT THE LOWEST PRICES If you’re waiting to get the best deals of the year, Black Friday probably isn’t the day to go out. While stores may offer one special item at an outrageously low price, the rest of the sales can’t compete with other times of the year. Headphones are cheapest in August, vacuums are more affordable in April, and if you’re shopping for

the holidays, keep in mind that toys will be priced at their lowest 10 days before Christmas.

because it’s $200 off, buy some new winter coats because they’re four for the price of three, and fill their cart with other incredible sales. Do you need 10 HDMI cables? Of course not. But when they’re on sale for $2.99 each, how can you say no to that bargain? If there is a specific item you want that’s on sale during Black Friday, like those cute department store boots or a PlayStation 4, then by all means get out there early and take advantage of the deal. But if you have a long shopping list, want to save money in the long run, or don’t know what you’re after, Black Friday isn’t worth the stress.

YOU WANT THE BEST BRANDS Here’s an insider secret: Most stores get new inventory to advertise specifically for doorbusters and Black Friday sales. New TVs at 75 percent off will get lots of people in the door, but those televisions aren’t the best brands. If you need a cheap dorm TV, then Black Friday is your day. But if you want a quality television to show off your 4K Ultra HD copy of “Avengers: Infinity War,” you’re better off waiting until after the New Year. YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY It’s hard for people to say no when they’re afraid they’ll regret not jumping on a deal when they had the chance. So they grab the $750 laptop
