EVENT RECAP

The topic of insurance has long been an important one in the condominium industry. Time has not diminished the interest in getting a handle on understanding the complexities; rather it has increased them. Over the course of months, enquiries relating to insurance policies, premiums and deductibles were being asked. To help owners, boards and those working in the industry, we brought you a 2-part educational event on January 19 th and 26 th . Interest was substantial as registrations increased to more than 75. “Stay -at- home” duties and business did prevent some regis- trants from “zooming” in. We missed “seeing” you. Thanks to Jennifer Dickenson of Dickenson Condo Management for setting up our Zoom Meetings so that we can all participate. As well, thank you so much to our presenters, moderators and participants for your interest and partic- ipation. In part 1 of the event, our presenters Tricia Baratta, RIB (Ont), Commercial Account Executive with Gallagher and Wally McNeilly, Account Executive with HL Hamilton Group took us through the fundamentals, including what’s going on in the market, how to combat increasing premiums and perhaps more importantly, who is responsible for insuring specifics and providing risk management programs. Boards are concerned by the rising costs of premiums and deductibles and some can even question whether they can get corporation insurance with the record of claims they have experienced. Victoria Phillips, RCM of HighPoint Property Management Corporation brought best guess practices on budgeting, communication and risk management to the conversation. Thanks to Thorne Property Man- agement Ltd. for sponsoring this event. Legal requirements of insurance do require that we call upon the professionals to guide us through what can mystify us when dealing with claims and the applicable policies. Barry Scott, LL.B., ACCI, FCCI of Scott Petrie LLP, Luis Hernandez, LL.B. of Shibley Righton LLP and member of CCI Windsor-Essex Chapter and Laura Gurr, J.D., of Co- hen Highley LLP, who also performed the duty of moderator, discussed the intricacies that often befuddle us when

dealing with the legal aspects of claims and responsibilities, includ- ing some discussion on the Stand- ard Unit By-law. Thanks to McConville Omni Insurance Bro- kers for sponsoring the event. Condominium insurance can be complicated, but nevertheless im- portant to understand. In a nut- shell, this slide can undoubtedly make responsibilities of owner and corporation just that much clearer. Thanks to Tricia Baratta from Gal- lagher for creating it for her presen- tation and providing it to us. February was a frantic time for many of us and we were forced to postpone our event. We will be revisiting our calendar to resched- ule.
