Children Should be Able to Completely Obey Their Parents. Col. 3:20 This, of course, can only be done as they see and realize that their parents have chosen the right path and have requested obedience to that which is right and proper. If a child sees dishonesty and other evil things in the parent’s life, he can hardly be expected to want to imitate him or to follow his instructions. There is a great need for training chil dren to know what is right and what is wrong so that they can render obedi ence. Ungodly parents often force their children into evil paths. Children Should See Piety in Their Parents. 1 Tim. 5:4 Thè home should be a miniature church in which godliness abounds and the parents are the leaders and teach ers. Children have a right to expect their parents to be upright and godly. They should be able to see the effect of the Word of God in the lives and hearts of the father and mother. If they see no piety, they will not expect to find it elsewhere. Their faith will be shattered. Children who have not been out in the world have a right to see the true Chris tian life revealed in the father and mother. tions about them. Parents should know God’s Word and God’s plan so they will be equipped to guide the thinking of their children into God’s channels. Chil dren ask questions about other matters ruch as government, education, et cetera. Parents should see the great privilege-* that is theirs of giving their children good instruction and of answering them intelligently when they make inquiry about many things. Parents Should Punish Their Children. Prov. 19:18 Punishment should be corrective in every case. One little girl said that her name was “Mary, don’t.” Her parents cried “ don’t” at her all the time. They gave no wise instruction or kindly help. Parents should realize that to condone selfishness, stinginess, and rebellion against authority, will only result in producing a militant rebel against all law and order. Sin is inherent in every child. Disobedience calls for some form of punishment which will effectively train the youth. Parents Should Teach the Scripture to Their Children. Prov. 6:20-22 The only preventive and the only an tidote and the only remedy for sin is found in the Word of God. Unless the fear of God is taught the children, their young minds will be thrown into so ciety with no fear of God and no feeling of responsibility to the law-makers. God expects the parents, in fact, He de mands that they teach the truth of God from the Word of God.

The Children Should See Faith in Their Parents. 2 Tim. 1:15 When children are reared by parents who fight and curse, drink and gamble, ignore the Word of God, and live entire ly for the world, it can hardly be ex pected that they will be anything better than the parents. An atmosphere filled with smoke, oaths, and bitterness, is not conducive to the development of good character or Christian service in the hearts of children. Children usually want to imitate their parents. They feel that it is right to live as the parents live and usually they have no higher aims. The Children Should be Proud of- Their Parents. 2 Chron. 6:7 Solomon spoke with happy assurance and sweet memory of his father, David.' He admired his father. He saw in him one who was a man of God and a friend of God. He remembered the great desire of his father to build a house for God. He remembered that David held back nothing from God. He could see with his own eges and hear with his own ears the dependence that his father had upon the God of heaven. He saw God working with and for his father and this gave him unbounding confidence and unwa vering love for his father, David. Parents look at their children in many ways. Some see them as evil “ brats” to be beaten, punished, and endured. Others see them as olive plants around the table, having great possibilities, and look upon them as precious objects of affection. Some want their children to be in “ society” ; some have great ambitions for their children in marriage. Many godly mothers give their children to the Lord for His service. Some parents see great potentialities in their little ones and make provision for the development of these latent gifts. Parents Should be Thoughtful Toward Their Children. Col. 3:21 Children do not know what is best for them or what is harmful. They make many requests which must be answered in the negative. Parents need wisdom, kindness, and patience in meeting the desires of the little inquiring minds. If they are trained wisely and helpfully, they -will admire their parents, but if they are mistreated and roughly an swered, they will despise them. The parent should see in the child a student who must learn everything and should learn wisely and well. The child is the apprentice to the father, and should be treated as such. Parents Should Answer Their Children Intelligently. Ex. 13:14 Children in this and other civilized countries are reared in the midst of re ligion. They see and hear things connect ed with the church which are mysteries to them. Of course, they will ask ques- A P R I L , I 9 4 8
