I t has been over six months since Joan had her hip replaced. She was very happy with the results, and no longer dreads the simplest of activities, such as grocery shopping. She can now enjoy walking her dog and meeting her friends for lunch...pain free! However, she does notice that she still has a slight limp, and feels her walking and standing edurance are not as good as they could be.
For most people, having their hip replaced improves their quality of life dramatically. Having minimal pain and a new hip ball joint makes a difference. When Joan followed up with her surgeon, he said everything looks great. The scar had healed and the X-rays were perfect, but she felt she could be even better.
A fter a total hip surgery, some patients would like to have more function. Sure, the pain has gone, but they would like to be able to walk longer distances, be stronger getting out of a chair, have more flexibility, return to playing golf and other recreational activi- ties. After surgery, there is often muscle weakness around the hip and pelvis, muscle tightness, and, on occasion, leg length changes. These can affect your ability to function to your fullest potential.
