year ago had no use for God, the LORD JESUS, or the Bible, have been awakened by the utter failure of human philosophy, and human science, and human sociology, amid the awful calamities of the present war, and begin to think again of the God of their fathers, and of His Word, and of His Son, Jesus Christ. “And he repaired the altar of the LORD that liras broken down.” Elijah began by repairing the altar of the LORD that was broken down. That is exactly where the reformation must begin in every backslid­ den home, as well as in every backslidden nation. There is many a home in our land today in which there was once an altar of the God of the Bible; but it has been broken down and should be built up again at once. v. 31. v. 30. "And Elijah said unto all the peo­ ple, ‘Come near unto me!”’ Elijah stood single-handed for God, one against four hundred and fifty (v. 19). When the failure of the prophets of Baal was complete, then Elijah called the people unto himself, that he might draw them near unto God. It was not at all that he wished to attach the people to himself, but that he wished to unite them with Jehovah, that he called them near unto him. The great temptation that besets every prophet and preacher is to draw the people to himself, rather than unto God. Elijah all through his life came off victorious over this temptation. “And all the people came near unto him’’ ■Having seen the failure ■of Baalism, they were now ready to listen to the prophet of God.
