flesh, and the problems of daily living must be solved. “ Diligence,” a word used twice in our Scripture passage, is the keynote of success in the Christian life as well as in the busi ness world. In the spiritual realm, one must be continually in communion with God to become proficient in His language and in the use of spiritual weapons. Fur thermore, the Lord may be called rever ently the Director of Employment in the Christian’s life. It is He who places us, either as “ full-time” workers in His serv ice, or as secular workers who can bring just as much honor to Him as so-called Christian workers, if the common task is consecrated to the glory of God. Our problem is to learn what He wants us, as individuals, to do, and diligently to pre pare for that job. Earnest prayer never goes unanswered; He will place us when we are ready. In these days when unemployment is common, the Christian young person has opportunity to give a testimony to the fact that for those who trust in Him, “the Lord will provide.” Not always will the kind of employment be given that the applicant de sires. Sometimes the Lord may lead His child through a very humbling experience. He did this with Joseph— but in due time He raised him to a place of high authority. David was chosen to be a king, but he needed to serve first as a shepherd. God has a place of high opportunity for every born- again one. Let us be careful lest by heed lessness and lethargy we forfeit the right to

M AY 1, 1938 JOBS IN A CHANGING WORLD 2 P eter 1:2-11 Meditation on the Lesson Employment has always presented a complexity of problems, but at this time the conditions of economic adj ustment are laden with aggravated difficulties. As a result, many competent young people have become discouraged early in life, and have drifted into states of existence much in ferior to their former lofty ideal. Scores have been disillusioned, and a woefully large number have become embittered with life. What a pity, when life can mean so much to a yoling person— to a Christian young person! Resting one’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is a most practical experience. He has promised to save, keep, guide, and bless those who trust in Him, and the testimony of thousands is that He actually does, even in this age when many doubt His very existence. He directs not only in spiritual matters, but also in the preparation for and the securing of jobs. He knows where the work is, and He also knows which of Charles T. His children are equipped for those posi tions. Our responsibility is to be in Him, and to be in His w ill; He will do the rest. And it is Christ, not the world, who is to measure the importance of the work we do at His command. Peter was once a young man, not unac quainted with the enigmas which are the heritage of every youth who has come to the crossroads of decision. In our Scripture lesson for toda/, after speaking of the righteousness o f God and the grace of the Lord Jesus, Peter admonishes us to give “ all diligence” to our spiritual growth in Christ. W ith personal faith in Christ our Saviour as our foundation, these other graces are to be added: virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. Do not these building materials suggest a substantial Christian structure? Peter declares that the result will be that our lives will bear fruit—fruit well pleasing unto God. Thus our main concern should be that of our eternal build ing. But how about our present condition ?
