M A Y 17 Just and Gracious

"Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” (Rom. 5:9). God is so holy and just that He demands the penalty of His broken law to be paid. God is so gracious that, to save us from paying it, He came forth in the Person of Jesus. God in Christ went to the cross that there He might take upon Himself the guilt of the whole human race, and thus unveil the passion of His heart for a world of sinners. There the penalty was fully paid, and now God is just, and yet the Justifier of those who believe in Jesus. W e are justi fied by His blood. The cross is God’s grace in action.— F rederick P. W ood . M A Y 18 His Beauty in Us "And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us” (Psa. 90:17). There is a moral power in beauty; it elevates the heart of the man that sees it. It is not enough that a man should display the law of holiness; he must display the beauty of holiness. There are some whose religion has every quality but one— attrac tiveness. . . . They are impressed above all things with the power of the Lord, and they would like to display His power; they do not see that the uppermost garment of the religious life must be the beauty of the Lord. . . . O Thou who art the Source of beauty, let Thy beauty overshadow my soul. Let T h y ,beauty be upon me as an outer most robe; above all, on the top of all, may I put on Thy charity.— 'G eorge M atheson . M A Y 19 Perfection Through Hardship “ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishetk, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 1:7). O f course, the waiting time is a testing time. . . . It is a grand hardening, toughen ing process—having to wait. While you are awaiting, Providence has you on the anvil, and is hammering, pounding, and seeming to destroy you. It is not so; God is working you, and the end will show how splendidly He has done it to His own sweet will, and to His own magnificent design. — J o h n M c N eill . M A Y 20 Going the Second Mile "And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain” (Matt. 5:41). “ Go thou a m ile!” ’Twas thus the law gave its command, And without mercy showed its hand: And then, the while, Frail duty sobbed, “ I’ll do my best, But, should I fail, who’ll go the rest?” Then, with a smile, Love said, “ I’ll go a mile, And go another, that means twain, And go in sunshine or in rain.” Love knows no guile: Frail duty tried to all obey,- While love went singing on her way; She soon passed duty, struggling on,

Some acquaintance with good music is a part of a well-rounded education. At Stony Brook a boy finds opportunity for direct musical expression as well as enjoyment of fine music—through the Glee Club and Orchestra, group singing, concerts by visiting artists, and private instruction in piano, pipe organ, violin, 'cello, voice and composition. One of the elective studies is a course in music appreciation. io n y ffroo k Jch o o l Please mention King’s Business Frank E. Gaebelein, Litt.D., Headmaster , Stony Brook, Long Island, N . Y .

M A Y 14 Spirit-Led

CH R IST IA N GREET ING C A R D S For Sale or for Personal Use

"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Rom. 8:14). Breathe on me, Holy Spirit, at The dawning of the day, Before its duties gather round The steps upon my way; Amid the din and clash of life T o drown Th y gentle voice, Oh, bring me close, and closer still In guidance to rejoice. Direct me in the mode of life Wherein Th y hand shall guide, And let me know without mistake That Thou art by my side; In great and small point out to me Each touch and plan of Thine, And give me grace and sight to see— Thy W ill is also mine. —E. M . B e w l e y . M A Y 15 Pleading the Promises "I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel” (Ezek. 36:37). God expects to hear from you before you can expect to hear from Him. If you restrain prayer, it is no wonder the mercy promised is retained. Meditation is like the lawyer’s studying the case in order to his pleading at the bar: when, therefore, thou hast viewed the promise, and affected thy heart with the riches of it, then fly to the throne of grace, and spread it before the Lord.— W illiam G u r n a l l . M A Y 16 A Protecting Fire "For our God is a consuming fire” (Heb. 12:29). Happy is the soul that realizes the pro tecting hand and presence of God. . . . Do not be afraid in the hour of temptation when the whole trinity of evil, the world with all its allurements, the flesh with all its subtlety, and the devil with all his experi ence, surrounds you. Remember, nearer is the blessed Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the Father embracing, the Son dying, and the Holy Spirit within. Oh, the safety, certainty, and enjoyment of those who are found thus in the protecting circle of fire!— B ishop T aylor S m it h .
