FISHIN’ IN THE FLORIDA KEYS Unforgettable Father-Son Fishing Adventure T here’s absolutely nothing better than getting out on the water, fighting and reeling in a big fish. That’s why, when spring break rolled

I called Captain Bannerot last minute, and luckily, he was able to take us on a full-day fishing trip.We were incredibly fortunate because it wouldn’t have been the same fishing trip without him. I called and made reservations for Jonathan and me to stay at the Ocean View Inn at Islamorada, which is a very clean “old-school” style motel with only seven rooms, a nice restaurant, supposedly the oldest liquor license in the Florida Keys, a swimming pool, and a private dock. It was a day of nonstop reeling and fun.We limited out on both the mangrove snapper and the Spanish mackerel. We caught a bunch of difference species of fish; amongst them were grouper, yellowtail, and blue runners. Jonathan even caught a 200-pound lemon shark! When you’re looking for a time to enjoy excitement and adventure with your son, watching his face light up as he hooks a huge fish is a great place to start. After a day on the water, we had dinner at the famous Shrimp Shack, and then we launched the skiff from a natural boat ramp off the side of the Overseas Highway for an evening fishing trip. Jonathan and I made this trip one that we will never forget! Even though it was a short trip with a lot of driving, we took advantage of the time we had together and made memories from here to the Keys and back. Seizing the moment meant a lot to both of us.We are looking forward to another trip to the Keys this summer!

around last month, there couldn’t have been a more perfect trip for my son and me. Time was winding down, and we only had a couple of days to make the expedition happen, but when Jonathan said, “Dad, let’s not waste spring break — let’s do something fun!” something clicked, and I knew exactly what I needed to do. After getting the last-minute green light from Alison, I made a couple of calls, and we packed our stuff, loaded the skiff, and at 4 a.m., we left for the beautiful Florida Keys. “WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A TIME TO ENJOY EXCITEMENT AND ADVENTURE WITH YOUR SON, WATCHING HIS FACE LIGHT UP AS HE HOOKS A HUGE FISH IS A GREAT WAY TO START.” I called two fishing charter captains to see about getting Jonathan and I out on the water with some nice fish. I called my long-time friend, Captain Vic Tison, a local charter captain, who had nothing available. Feeling adventurous and looking to make a more substantial trip out of Jonathan’s spring break, I called Florida Keys fishing charter captain Scott Bannerot. I met Captain Bannerot on a previous vacation in the Florida Keys. We’d previously fished with Captain Bannerot a couple of times, and he has become a friend. Captain Bannerot is, hands down, one of the best fishing charter guides in the Florida Keys. With a master’s degree in Marine Biology and over 20 years’ experience running charters all over the globe, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone better.

CAN YOU GET A DUI IN A DRIVERLESS VEHICLE?

What the Law States

Self-driving vehicles may be the wave of the future, but as with any new frontier of technology, the laws governing the use of these advancements are still catching up. For example, can you get a DUI in a self- driving car? THE LAW When auto manufacturers announced autonomous vehicles, they made sure the law could keep up with the new technology. Just like an airplane has an “autopilot” feature, so do these new vehicles. For the autopilot feature to work in a car, a passenger has to be sitting in the driver’s seat. But if they aren’t actually driving, where does the responsibility lie? As long as you’re behind the wheel with keys in the ignition, you could be classified as an operator. Operators may not actually be driving, but they can still be arrested for driving under the influence.

CHANGE ON THE HORIZON? Passengers are classified as an operator in a self-driving car because the vehicle and its autopilot feature require a human to operate them. In these cases, the intent is factored into the interpretation of the law.

The waters get muddy when a self-driving vehicle does not have to have a passenger in the driver’s seat to operate. So that means you’re in the clear, right? Still wrong. In this instance, it’s still plausible that the person riding could take control of the vehicle. In this case, “physical control laws” could come into play, which may result in a DUI.

Currently, and for the foreseeable future, all self- driving cars require a fully attentive driver at the wheel, leaving that person directly responsible for any event that transpires in their car. Whether that will change soon has yet to be decided. In the meantime, if you’ve been wrongfully charged in a DUI case, reach out to us today.

SLIP AND FALL ACCIDENTS Get the Compensation You Deserve

Have you suffered injuries as a result of a slip and fall accident that you believe should have been avoided? Have you suffered permanent injuries caused by someone else’s negligence? If so, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. Slip and Fall Hazards Slip and fall accidents are common, but it’s often difficult to prove liability in these cases. Generally, slip and fall injuries occur when a property owner fails to keep their property free from hidden hazards or dangerous conditions. Hidden hazards can be anything from a broken staircase to a puddle of water on a white tile floor. These issues can be easily avoided, but if they’re not, they can cause harm to others. Proving Negligence When considering negligence in a slip and fall case, one must consider if the owner of the property acted reasonably and sensibly. Property owners have a legal duty to make sure their property is safe and hazard- free. Consider the following:

• Reasonability of hazard: Did something reasonable create the hazard? • Appropriate actions: Did the owner act to fix the hazard? • Reasonable prevention: Could the owner have prevented the incident? If you were legally on the property and suffered a slip and fall because of hazardous conditions, you may have a case. Compensation Benefits A slip and fall can cause various injuries, most commonly to the neck and back, which can result in serious brain, hip, and orthopedic issues. If you have suffered injuries as a result of a slip and fall accident on another person’s property, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, out-of-pocket expenses, lost wages, and other damages. In order to maximize your

compensation, you need to consult an experienced slip and fall attorney.

• Length of time: Did the owner have plenty of time to recognize and resolve the hazard?

3 OF THE MOST FORMIDABLE MOMS IN HISTORY

Shape the World MOTHERS 3 OF HISTORY’S BRAVEST MOMS

Sojourner Truth

Emmeline Pankhurst

Irena Sendler

Moms make the world go round. After running the gauntlet of childbirth, they raise and guide us throughout our lives, shouldering the tremendous burden and responsibility of motherhood. Mothers are in turn formidable, kind, powerful, gentle, wise, fierce, patient, supportive, empathetic, driven, and full of love. In honor of Mother’s Day, here are three historic moms who never stopped fighting for what they believed in. SOJOURNER TRUTH (1797–1883) Before she escaped from NewYork slaveholder John Dumont, Sojourner Truth had at least three of her children sold away from her. When Dumont went back on his promise to emancipate Truth and her infant daughter in 1826, she took the girl and fled to an abolitionist Quaker family, but she was forced to leave

her other daughter and her 5-year-old son, Peter, behind. Soon after, she learned that Peter had been illegally sold by Dumont to a slaveholder in Alabama, so she went to court and secured his safe return. It was the first successful case brought by a black woman against a white man in American history.Truth went on to become a prominent abolitionist and a speaker for women’s rights, delivering her famous impromptu speech, “Ain’t I aWoman?” in May of 1851. IRENA SENDLER (1910–2008) When the Nazis invadedWarsaw in September of 1939, Irena Sendler, a 29-year-old social worker and mother of two, hatched a scheme to rescue Jewish children from the brutal ghettos.Along with many friends and colleagues, she smuggled out nearly 2,500

Jewish orphans, hiding infants on trams and garbage wagons and guiding kids through a labyrinth of secret passageways beneath the city. EMMELINE PANKHURST (1858–1928) Despite being a wife and the mother of five children — two of whom died tragically young — Emmeline Pankhurst became one of the fiercest advocates for women’s suffrage in the late 19th century. After founding theWomen’s Social and Political Union in 1903, she and her cohorts adopted an aggressive strategy to raise awareness for the issue; they began by buttonholing politicians and staging rallies, then progressed to vandalism, window smashing, and arson. She was instrumental in the movement. Pankhurst lived to see women gain the right to vote in 1928.
