comes from Paul and the other apostles of Christ. The first duty, then, of the Church is to break with this theology and get back to Jesus. IV. The. Answer to the Explanation and Justification of the Modernists for the Rejection of Christ and His Atonement 1. Contrary to Common Sense. The first answer is the verdict of common sense. If this view of the history of Christianity is correct, then we must believe that the true content and meaning of Christianity were lost at the very beginning, and that the apostles, who were closest to Christ, who had been witnesses of the events of His life and death, from the time of His baptism to His ascension into heaven, and who had been carefully and privately instructed as to what they were to teach, and whom Jesus trusted to be faithful witnesses of His Gospel, for He Himself wrote nothing, that these men, qualified above all others to tell us what Christ, meant, and who He was, and what great work He did, were utterly mistaken, gave to the world a false idea of Christ, and that it has been reserved for men in the twentieth century to discover what Christianity really is. This is contrary to common sense. Such a position, too, involves the complete repudiation of God’s providential care for the truth and for His Church. If God gave a revelation to man in Christ, and as soon as Christ was vanished from the earth, permitted the truth to be obscured and lost, and the whole Church to entertain for centuries a colossal delusion concerning Him, then, if God cared so little about the truth in Christ, why should we today greatly concern ourselves about Christ? - 2. Contrary to Fact. a. Christ’s Method of Teaching. Earnest Christians are sometimes perplexed when they are told that Jesus confined Himself almost entirely to such themes as the Kingdom of God, mercy, repentance, self-righteousness and hypoc risy, purity and charity, and had little or nothing to say about forgiveness of sins, and that His religion was an ethical religion, interested in the welfare of mankind and in the upbuilding of character, in contrast with what the Church has taught about atonement through His death and resurrection. Perhaps some troubled mind will be tempted to say, If this latter idea was so important, the only way of salvation, why did Jesus have so little to say about it? In facing this apparent difficulty we must bear in mind that there are two ways of teaching— one is by full, direct, and complete statement and definition. But that was not the ruling method of Jesus. He taught more by implication, by preparatory statement, by question, by parable. For example, the parable of the two men who went up to the temple to pray, and the rejection of the self-righteous Phar isee and the acceptance of the man who said, “ God be merciful to me, a sinner,” is quite a different thing from what Petfer or John or Paul say about forgiveness of sin through the death of Christ. Yet, when one places the two statements side by side, one sees how that brief parable of Jesus, with no reference to the death of Christ, contains the whole doctrine of forgiveness and mercy as explained by the apostles after the death of Christ. It must be borne in mind that Christ was teaching before, and not after, His death. He provided for further instructions and develop ment of the truths He had stated. He said that there were many things He would like to tell the disciples, “ but ye cannot bear them now” ; that He would send the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, who would lead them into all truth. What Chrysostom said in that great passage of his about wishing to see the dust of those lips through which Christ
