FROM MIRY PIT TO SOLID ROCK (A. letter to an old college friend.) You have asked me, my dear friend, about the change that has recently come over me. I will tell you. One evening not long ago, shortly after dark, as I was walking down the street, I was attracted by an earnest looking man in Salvation Army uniform, speaking to a small crowd gathered about him. Xheard only these words as I passed by: “ He brought me up out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock.” I had an indistinct impression of having heard the words before, but could not recall where or when. As I passed along the street the words kept coming to my mind, in a sort of haunting rhythm, He brought me up Out of an horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet Upon a rock. As I fell asleep that night I seemed to hear, again and again, the same refrain, in curious, measured metre,— He brought me up Out of an horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet Upon a rock. The words haunted me during a restless night; and when I awoke, out of troubled sleep, there was the same quaint rhythm sounding in my ears. I could not escape these words in their queer, cadent measures. I was unable either to read or to work. My brain was in a whirl, and I .would repeat, over and over again,— He brought me up Despairing of diversion in books or work, I sought my gun and dog and went to the fields. For a while the eager running to and fro of my faithful pointer served to calm my nerves. Presently I missed the dog, and neither calls nor whistle brought any response. I recalled that I had last noticed the dog near an old abandoned cabin, so I set my steps in that direction. Just beyond the cabin I heard a low whine, coming, as it were, from under the ground. I found that the dog had fallen into an old well, where he was then barely able to keep his head above the muddy water. He had struggled faithfully to free himself from his prison, as could be seen in the marks of his feet and claws upon the sides of the well, in terrific efforts to reach the top. His successive upward lunges, as shown by the markings of his feet, had grown weaker and weaker, until finally he could barely keep his nose above the water. Fortunately the well was not deep, and after considerable exertion in the cold water, I managed to rescue my faithful friend, finding my reward in his great, expressive eyes so full of gratitude at his deliverance. And somehow, too, I felt the thrill of achievement, and a spirit of satisfaction. For had I not saved a life, even though the life of a dog? Had I not brought him up out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set his feet upon the rock? The thorough wetting and chill I had experienced sent me to bed with an attack of pneumonia. For some days I knew nothing, or remembered nothing. My first conscious ness, a week later, was the realization that I was still alive, with my faithful dog at my side, looking into my face. Out of an horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet Upon a rock.
